Michael Lang, the co-founder of the original 1969 festival, spoke to Billboard about the combing multiple genres for the 50th anniversary. “The lineup will be a mix of some of the old bands who are still performing and a lot of new headline talent,” said Lang. “Probably more than any other festival’s ever had. It’ll cross genres from rock to pop, folk and hip hop. It’s kind of representative of this idea of engagement and trying to steer toward acts that are heavily involved in social issues. So there’s some real gravitas in the performance and we want it to live on beyond the event.”

The lineup will also include artists who appeared at the 1969 Woodstock such as talking Santana, David Crosby, John Fogerty, Canned Heat, as well as members of Dead & Co. The performances will take place on three stages: the Peace Stage, Love Stage, and Music Stage—names that nod to the original music fest, which featured legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix, Sly and The Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, and Janis Joplin.

Woodstock was a music festival held on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, northwest of New York City, on the dates of August 15–18, 1969. The festival reportedly attracted an audience of more than 400,000 participants.

Billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of Woodstock.

In spite of torrential rain pouring all throughout the weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. Woodstock is still widely regarded as a vital moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive event that represented counterculture generation.

Woodstock 50 tickets will go on sale April 22. To find out more information, go to the festival’s official website.
