Batwoman star Ruby Rose took to Instagram ahead of her show’s October 6 premiere to share with fans a video of herself undergoing emergency back surgery.
The reason for the urgent procedure? Two herniated discs caused by intense stunt work, she explained; an injury that was risking severing her spinal cord and paralyzing her. It’s worth noting that this was a pre-existing injury, not one that Rose suffered while working on Batwoman – the actress previously revealed on Twitter in January 2018 “for the past few years (decade) I’ve been dealing with a spine issue,” for which she underwent back surgery last year.

To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck… A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed… I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal chord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms… Thank you Dr Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love. I am forever in your debt. And to anyone asking why I let them video it.. Did you not watch that Greys anatomy episode where they left a towel in a patient?? Also I wanted to see what happens when we go under.
Rose decided to break her silence after fans noticed her surgery scar and started inquiring about it. After chronic pain and numbness led her to seek solutions, doctors discovered the herniated discs. She also thanked her doctor for “allowing me to keep working and doing what I love. I am forever in your debt.”
This is not the first time Rose has undergone serious surgery. Last January, Rose revealed she was wheelchair-bound after going through a back procedure for her spinal issues, according to People.
Ruby was chosen as the lead for the forthcoming Batwoman series in August 2018. The show premieres on the CW on Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. ET.
