Never in Duke University history has their basketball team lost to a non-major conference team as the AP number 1 overall team in the NCAA. That changed on Tuesday night when Coach K’s Blue Devils took their first loss of the season to the Southland Conference Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 85-83.

Duke took this devastating overtime loss on their home court after the Lumberjacks came up with a steal in the final seconds of overtime leading to a Nathan Bain buzzer-beating layup on the other end.

The Lumberjacks were led in scoring by Kevon Harris who dropped 26 points on 11-19 shooting. “This will make their team a lot better,” SFA coach Kyle Keller told reporters after the game. “For us, we’ve got to keep our guys humble.”

“They were better down the line,” Coach K said on SFA’s performance. “The last play was really symbolic of about 8 or 9 plays that they had where they had free layups. We weren’t deserving of winning. That team was deserving of winning.”

Duke now drops to 6-1 on the season while Stephen Austin improves to 5-1.
