Things aren’t looking too good for R. Kelly right about now. Brooklyn prosecutors charged him with bribing Illinois officials to obtain a fake ID to marry Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old.
VIBE Magazine unearthed the marriage certificate which falsely stated the late singer was 18, meanwhile Kelly was 27 at the time.
The Pied Piper’s former tour manager, Demetrius Smith, told TMZ that he is going to testify against Kelly but he doesn’t want that to be the reason he gets convicted.
Smith tells the tabloid that he’s the one who purchased the fake ID so the marriage, that was later annulled, can happen. However, he argues that Kelly “needs help” but prosecutors are just trying to throw him in the slammer without seeing the bigger picture.
The allegations about R. Kelly’s marriage to Aaliyah has hung over his music career and is well-documented. Not only did VIBE find the whole marriage certificate, but Smith wrote about it in his book, and spoke about it on Surviving R. Kelly.
