Everyone knows by now that R. Kelly falsified documents to get an age-appropriate identification card for his underaged girlfriend so that he could “legal” marry her. There have been rumors as to why this marriage happened in the first place. Some say that she was pregnant. Some say they were madly in love. Some have even said it was because she wanted to be emancipated from her parents. Whatever the real reason is, the world has yet to know.

What do know is that a lot of grown people helped Robert Kelly (grown AF) marry his protegé, Aaliyah Haughton.

Demetrius Smith told TMZ Live, that he kinda came up with the idea. In a mixture of “it was me” and “it was an answer to a problem I didn’t want to have to do” he told the outlet, “I came up with the idea to do that.”

Remember R. Kelly pleaded not guilty to bribing someone to create the I.D. that was admitted to secure his marriage license to the starlet. Well, Smith’s new confession maybe a throw off, taking responsibility for this fraudulent act that contributed greatly to normalizing Kelly’s actions. He says though he did not know how old Aaliyah was. He just thought she was young. While he didn’t… he contends that Robert “knew that Aaliyah was young.”

“The ID that I did get for Aaliyah did not have her age on it at all,” Smith said. “Robert really didn’t have anything to do with that other than me suggesting it with other people.”

“He did marry Aaliyah, OK? That’s as much as I’m going to say with that,” Smith said.

Smith also added that he should not have done it. “It was a foolish thing for me to do,” noting that he should’ve contacted Aaliyah’s parents.

Because the marriage was not legal in the first place, it was annulled months later. Her parents saw to that.

Aaliyah had to get away from him and she did. She found new love in Damon Dash and enjoyed a successful carer. Unfortunately “Baby Girl,” as she was called by her friends, died in a plane crash in 2001.
