Former First Lady Michelle Obama took home her first Grammy for the audiobook version of her best-selling memoir Becoming. Obama beat out other nominees which included the Beastie Boys and Sekou Andres and The String Theory.
In a statement about winning her Grammy, Mrs. Obama says, “Thank you to the Recording Academy for this honor! I had plenty of doubts about sharing so much of myself in Becoming, but this moment is another reminder that when we own the truth of who we are, we give ourselves the chance to connect with others in real, meaningful ways.”
Becoming was released in 2018 and is described as “Michelle Obama chronicling the experiences that have shaped her from childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at The White House. Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defined expectations and whose story inspires us to do the same.”
