And many women of color are taking to social media to share their discontent with how the NFL has treated Colin Kaepernick over the last three years. Top Chef’s host Padma Lakshmi is one of them.

She took to her Instagram, a few hours before the big game started and posted a picture of her wearing Colin’s jersey with a captioned that stated: “Shout out to courage.” She remembers.

She remembers that in 2017, he kneeled during the national anthem to protest over the police violence towards people of color across the nation (specifically Black men) and was severely reprimanded.

At the time, Kaepernick played for the San Francisco The 49ers. That is before he opted out his contract (right before they were going to cut him) and was not picked up by another team.

Lakshmi, received both good and bad comments from fans. But she stood firm. #SheStillWithCap

Another woman of color that has continued her support of Kap is Ava DuVernay.

She tweeted, “Today during the Super Bowl, the National Football League and its allies will sanitize and co-opt a black protest movement. I refuse to watch that happen before my eyes as if it’s all good. Some things are worth more than an afternoon of football.”

She has a point. The NFL has moved forward with their collaboration with JAY-Z and it is interesting to see how much diversity has been woven into the planning of the program. Yet… there is no real connection to addressing CK’s original issue and the backlash he has received.

Ironically, the 49ers are up against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.
