President Donald Trump was in a pardoning mood on Tuesday afternoon. One of the men Trump pardon was former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. Hall of Famer Jerry Rice was so excited, he actually couldn’t wait to praise Trump for his actions.
Rice was in attendance for the White House announcement on Tuesday along with NFL legends Jim Brown, Ronnie Lott, and Charles Haley. The former wide receiver threw his support behind DeBartolo and commended Trump for pardoning the 73-year-old.
DeBartolo pleaded guilty to failing to report a felony when he paid former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards $400,000 to help secure a casino license.
DeBartolo had to pay a $1 million fine and was given two years probation in return for his testimony against Edwards, a Democrat. Because of his cooperation, DeBartolo wasn’t given any jail time.
DeBartolo was the owner of the 49ers for 14 years. In that time, the team won five Super Bowls. Rice won three Super Bowls with the 49ers under DeBartolo, who Rice said “was like that 12th man” of those teams.
“He’s the main reason why we won so many Super Bowls,” Rice said. “So today is a great day for him. I’m glad to be here and be a part of that. It’s just something I will never forget. This man, he has done so much in the community, has done so much in NFL football.”
Rice is clearly happy for his former boss.
