After much speculation, Deontay Wilder has confirmed that he will keep assistant coach Mark Breland on his team. Breland caught Wilder’s ire when he threw the towel into the ring during the seventh round of his second fight against Tyson Fury.
The action signaled Wilder’s first loss and the transfer of his WBC belt to Fury.
“I’m a warrior. I feel the same way I felt on fight night,” Wilder said in a statement to boxing correspondent Mike Coppinger. “If I have to go out, I want to go out on my shield. But I understand that my corner and my team has my best interest at heart.
“Mark Breland is still a part of Team Wilder.”
Breland is a 1984 Olympic gold medalist and former two-time world champion. The Brooklyn native is the assistant coach to head trainer Jay Deas.
