Former NFL wide receiver, Donald “Reche” Caldwell, was killed on Saturday night in Tampa, Florida. He was only 41 years old.
Reche’s mother confirmed his death to TMZ. She stated that he was getting ready to take his girlfriend on a date and went back inside to get his jacket. Reche’s girlfriend says that he was “ambushed” by a “couple people” who jumped out of the bushes trying to rob him. He was reportedly shot in the leg and chest and died en route to the hospital
Police are saying that this was most likely a targeted attack
Caldwell helped the Gators win a SEC Championship in 2000. He was a second-round draft pick in the 2002 NFL draft and was chosen by the San Diego Chargers. In 2006, he signed with the New England Patriots where he was the leading receiver that year with 760 yards. He went on to spend 6 years in the league and after his stint with the Patriots, played for the Redskins, and Rams.
Former teammate, Wes Welker, tweeted Sunday: “Reche’s smile and attitude were contagious! My thoughts and prayers go out to Bubba Caldwell and his family!”
The Patriots and Gators organizations also sent their condolences.
