The number of unemployment claims in the United States has risen by another 1.5 Americans.

CNN cites the statistic from the Department of Labor on Thursday, adding the number of first-time unemployment benefits has been dropping weekly since peaking at 6.9 million in March.

Since the mid-March economy shut down more than 44 million people have filed for initial unemployment benefits. The total this week is a 83,000 decrease form the prior week.

Nearly 706,000 people across 42 states also filed initial claims for the pandemic unemployment assistance program last week, which is designed to assist independent contractors, the self-employed, and gig workers.
