“After all of the time, the years that have passed, I never received a phone call about [Colin Kaepernick],” Carroll told reporters. “I never talked to another head coach about it. I never talked to anyone about it until today. I got a phone call today. I won’t tell you who it was but I got a phone call today asking inquiring about the situation, so I know somebody is interested. So we’ll see what happens with that.”

The 32-year-old Kaepernick is still young for his position and could have an opportunity to play again in the NFL especially with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologizing for the NFL’s original stance on the protest that Kaep started.

Carroll was one of the few coaches who gave Kaepernick a look after he left the 49ers to hit the free agency in 2017. After working out their former division rival, Carroll felt that Kaepernick was not the right fit but not for performance reasons.

As was reported at the time, Carroll said on Thursday that he didn’t sign Kaepernick in 2017 because he thought the former NFC Champion QB would end up as a starter on a different team.

“I regret that we weren’t the one way back when that just did it just to do it, even though I thought that it wasn’t the right fit necessarily for us at the time,” Carroll said in the conference call. “The reason it wasn’t the right fit is because I held him in such a high regard I didn’t see him as a backup quarterback and I didn’t want to put him in that situation with Russ.”

Those close to Kaepernick have said that he is currently in “the best shape of his life,” and seems to be just waiting on that call to get back to the league.
