Florida is continuing to be the lead hot spot for COVID-19 cases and posted a new high of any state with more than 15,000 infections in a single day. The previous high was over 12,000 set in New York, The New York Times reports.

The state is currently experienced overwhelmed hospitals, while also putting up record numbers as testing increases.

“It’s reminiscent of what everyone dealt with in New York,” Professor John Toney of the University of South Florida said. “It’s certainly putting a strain on a lot of the systems, even though hospitals are trying to accommodate.”

While the cases have spread rapidly throughout the state, Florida did see the reopening of Disney World and will be the host state for the Republican National Convention. Along with that, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is ordering public schools to reopen in August.

“If you can do Home Depot, if you can do Walmart, if you can do these things we absolutely can do the schools,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis has also discredited the assistance of New York state in providing shipments of an antiviral drug to help the padnemic fight, CNN reports. While addressing reporters, DeSantis said “They’re not helpung us” before expanding on a discussion of ventilators.

“I think that someone reached out to our office about ventilators — we got 6,000 just sitting idle, so we don’t need it,” he said. “We are working with the federal government on some of the Remdesivir.”
