D’Angelo verzuz Maxwell would’ve been legendary.
D’Angelo made his Verzuz debut and it was the first of its kind. The singer did a solo performance with “friends” and fans can’t get over it.
The Neo-soul pioneer declared himself H.E.R’s biggest fan after they performed his Lauryn Hill-assisted single, “Nothing Even Matters.” Method Man and Redman also made guest appearances, and D’Angelo closed the show out with “Untitled (How Does It Feel).”
After the show, Swizz Beatz revealed that D’Angelo was supposed to face-off with Maxwell in the virtual musical celebration on Valentine’s Day. But that didn’t work out and the Black Messiah was still ready to come out of hiding.
āThat didnāt work outā¦the fact that DāAngelo was still ready to goā¦and motivated, we had to celebrate himā¦no matter who was on stage with him,ā Swizz said. āWe had to celebrate that king because, as you can see, those songs that he played tonight, man, thatās real music and this is celebrational stageā¦and we couldnāt play around with him. We had to let him get his garden because he showed up and showed out.ā
He continued: āThat man pulled up to Verzuz three hours early. DāAngelo was the earliest in Verzuz history tonight. So, donāt get him showing up at the time he did (an hour after the show was scheduled to start) mixed up with the pre-show, which was by DJ Scratch.ā
