The Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder trilogy was pushed back after heavyweight champion Tyson Fury tested positive for COVID-19. Now, Wilder’s fiancée Telli Swift is calling cap.
“You’ve trained so hard, blood, sweat, and tears and then for someone to have COVID and Deontay’s fight with torn biceps, broken fingers, burns on his arms, and he still fought,” said Swift to TMZ. “So, I just feel like with COVID and you have sixteen days until the fight, he should still be able to fight and make it happen.”
Swift would go on to add, “I think he’s buying time, and I just feel like he feels Deontay is at the best looking-wise. Deontay’s mind… he eats, sleep, lives Tyson Fury. So he’s ready for Tyson.
The fight between Fury and Wilder was set for July 24 in Las Vegas, with showings on FOX and ESPN+ pay-per-view. The new target date for the fight is October 9 according to ESPN and will once again be at T-Mobile Arena.
“I wanted nothing more than to smash the ‘Big Dosser’ on July 24, but I guess the beating will have to wait,” Fury said. “Make no mistake, I will be back and better than ever. We will fight Oct. 9, and I will knock him spark out!”
“This is what we went to arbitration for,” said Shelly Finkel, Wilder’s manager. “He just wanted what was owed to him. He remains ready to reclaim his world title on Oct. 9.’’
The third fight was set after a December 2018 draw, followed by a February 2020 seventh-round stoppage. Neither man has released a comment about the postponement.
