Kyle Lowry’s playing days appear to be done in Toronto, as he is set to hit the free-agent market. While a few contending teams could use his service, it appears an upstart team.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reported on Monday that the Pelicans are planning to pursue Lowry to help fill the veteran presence needed to the team.

Lowry is 35, but there will be high interest in him this summer. He averaged 17.2 points and 7.3 assists per game for the Toronto Raptors this season. You can understand why the Pelicans would feel he could be an asset to Zion Williamson as the former No. 1 overall pick enters his third NBA season.

Lowry could fill a role on the Pelicans similar to the role Chris Paul is doing with the Phoenix Suns. While Lowry would be a great addition to a young Pelicans’ core, don’t be surprised if the Los Angeles Lakers make a strop push for him. Lowry is the exact type of point guard LeBron James and Anthony Davis needs to regain their championship form.
