Space Jam isn’t the only retro thing from the 90’s that’s making a comeback. The Air Jordan 9, which made its debut in 1993, is set for a new “Particle Grey” release in early 2022.

The Air Jordan 9 has its own special place in sports and sneaker history. It was released just before Michael Jordan’s unexpected retirement shortly before the 1993-94 season when he left for a brief career in minor league baseball. It was the first signature sneaker that the NBA legend never wore during a regular season game. However, other NBA greats, such as Mitch Richmond, Kendall Gil, and Penny Hardaway, did rock the brand while Jordan was away for the NBA for that brief time period.

Paying homage to his baseball career, the shoe’s design was inspired by baseball cleats Jordan wore during his brief stint in minor league baseball. Over the years, the shoe design has gone through many iterations and color schemes while still remaining true to the sneaker’s original focus on quality form and function.

The 2022 Air Jordan 9 “Particle Grey” is made with a mix of nubuck and leather and will feature a red, black, white, and particle grey color scheme with a black upper, grey overlays, red accents, and a clean white rubber sole.

While no official design has been released yet, @zsneakerheads Instagram account, widely regarded as an authority on such matters, released a tentative mockup of the shoe.
