During Drink Champs, T-Pain revealed that he thought the song was an attack after he first heard it.

“Of course! A wise man once said, ‘You can’t knock the hustle,’” T-Pain said. “I’m the face of this. Just like Lil Yachty was the face of mumble rap—anytime somebody talks about mumble rap, Lil Yachty was the first person to come up. I was the face of Auto-Tune. Anytime somebody said, ‘Auto-Tune,’ I’m the face. So, when you say Auto-Tune is wack, I’m the face.”

Hov would reveal in an interview after the song’s release that auto-tune wasn’t a shot at T-Pain because he made great melodies using the tool. T-Pain revealed he had created a diss track toward Hov but thankfully never released it. Pain would also detail running into JAY-Z and wanting to thank him and apologize, only to run all the words into one and deliver “sorry for everything.”
