While wearing her newly cut TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) and relaxing in the pool. Cameras caught Gabrielle Union having a teachable mommy-daughter moment with her daughter Kaavia James (aka Shady Baby). Giving a lesson on skin and acceptance. Union posted to TikTok on Thursday, August 12, writing, “Teaching her to love every part of herself 🤎,” They start off the conversation with Shady Baby asking about moles and Union pointing out that she has a mole on her face, the conversation went like this:
Oh no! I not have a mole,” Kaavia replies, shaking her head.
“Well, I think you have a couple,” Union says.
“Oh no, I got a couple right there,” Kaavia then points to her mouth, Union then informs her that those were her lips.
“I’m pretty sure you have a mole somewhere,” Union says, looking for one of her ones while pulling one of Kaavia’s feet out from under the water. “Oh, there’s your mole!” Kaavia seems fascinated as Union continues, “But see, it’s not bothering anyone. So you just leave it!”
“Leave it?” Kaavia asks.
“Yeah, it’s a part of you,” Union says. “So that’s Kaav’s mole. And mom’s mole.”
“Yes! We got moles!” Kaavia exclaims with adorable excitement — a sentiment Union repeats with equal energy. In fact, it’s what she wrote in the caption, too.
It’s safe to say Union will continue to have important conversations with her daughter not only about moles but skincare, loving herself, and everything that makes Kaavia and girls like her unique, and when these moments are shared on social media young people around the world will also receive the lesson. The video has been viewed over 9 million times on TikTok and counting. Viewers praised Union in the comments section and also shared stories of their own experiences. “My mama always called them ‘beauty marks’ and make me feel special that I had so many “My mommy had this convo with me about my dark skin and all my life I never wanted to be any other color even with I was teased. “I used to tell my son he had so many freckles because that’s where the angels kissed him goodbye before they sent him to me.”
