Fresh off his acquittal on felony assault charges in Los Angeles, A$AP Rocky is pushing ahead with his plans to acquire English football club Tranmere Rovers.
The rapper, born Rakim Mayers, was found not guilty on two counts of assault related to a 2021 dispute. A jury deliberated for just three hours before reaching the verdict, prompting an emotional reaction from Rocky, who embraced his supporters and even lost his balance in the process. “Thank y’all for saving my life,” he told jurors as they exited the courtroom.
Rocky’s interest in Tranmere Rovers is tied to his attorney, Joe Tacopina, who has a history of involvement in European football clubs, including Roma, Bologna, Venezia, and, most recently, Serie C side SPAL. However, Tacopina’s tenure at SPAL has not been without controversy, as a three-month suspension for a late payment violation reportedly delayed the Tranmere takeover.
Rocky is part of a consortium looking to purchase an 80% stake in Tranmere, a deal valued at approximately $15 million. Indonesian investors Santini Group would retain their minority share. Tranmere chairman Mark Palios has acknowledged that Rocky’s involvement could bring star power to the club but stressed that it is not essential to the deal. “Whether he brings A$AP Rocky in or not is his decision,” Palios stated.
American celebrity investment in lower-league football clubs has surged in recent years. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Wrexham has revitalized the club, while NFL legend Tom Brady took a stake in Birmingham City. Meanwhile, JJ Watt invested in Burnley, and Leeds United has attracted backers such as Will Ferrell, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas.
Throughout Rocky’s trial, Rihanna was a steady presence in the courtroom, often accompanied by the couple’s two young sons, RZA and Riot. Following his acquittal, Rocky was spotted shopping for Rihanna’s birthday, before shifting his focus to his upcoming album. Rihanna is also set to appear on Rocky’s new project, as the couple have been collaborating on each other’s long-awaited releases. Her album, R8, has been in the works for eight years, making its potential 2024 release highly anticipated.
With his legal troubles behind him, A$AP Rocky is now balancing music, family, and his growing business ventures—including his ambitious move into the world of football ownership.
