Lefty Gunplay, the Los Angeles-based rapper known for his feature on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX track “TV Off,” was arrested in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 24.
The LA rapper is facing multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance. Jail records reveal he was booked for three offenses: failing to wear a seat belt, possessing a prohibited item in a correctional facility, and possession of a controlled substance. Authorities allege he was found with between four and 200 grams of an unspecified substance, a charge that could carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine under Texas law.
Get this: after posting a $35,000 bond, Gunplay was released the same day. The rapper had traveled to El Paso to host a party and perform at Friends Sports Bar & Kitchen but missed the event due to his arrest. In a conversation with local radio host Patti Diaz, Gunplay addressed the incident vaguely, promising to share more details later. “Later on, I’ll get into what really happened, but if you know, you know,” he said. “I feel like I gotta make it up to my El Paso fans. I know I have a lot of supporters in Texas. Things didn’t go as planned, but everything happens for a reason. I love Texas… Hopefully, we can make it right.”
This untimely arrest comes after Gunplay made waves last year by teasing a potential deluxe edition of GNX. During an interview with Bootleg Kev, he opened up about collaborating with Kendrick Lamar on “TV Off” and hinted at unreleased material from the acclaimed rapper. “He has some stuff. We did two, three songs. He’s got things in the chamber,” Gunplay revealed. “He told me we’re going to work again, for sure.” He also suggested Lamar was considering a deluxe version of the album, adding, “He’s very secretive.”
Anyways, Gunplay’s arrest has sparked conversations among fans, who are eager to see how he will address the situation and fulfill his promise to make amends with his Texas supporters. As the rapper navigates this legal challenge, his future collaborations and musical projects remain a topic of interest in the hip-hop community.
Whelp, good luck, Lefty … Innocent until proven–you know the rest.
