On this day in 2001, legendary Slum Village producer Jay Dee officially reintroduced himself to the world as J Dilla, marking the occasion with the release of his debut solo album, Welcome 2 Detroit.

The 16-track LP, released under BBE Music, showcased Dilla’s signature production style while also shining a light on rising talents from his hometown, including Elzhi and Phat Kat. More than just a beat tape, the album was a statement—Detroit’s sound, creativity, and culture, all wrapped in Dilla’s unmistakable grooves.

Though a solo project, Welcome 2 Detroit saw Dilla taking a step back on several cuts, letting others take center stage. On the first single, “Pause”, he let the verses breathe through guest appearances, while on his cover of Donald Byrd’s “Think Twice,” Dilla himself handled lead vocals, backed by the smooth keyboard work and harmonies of Motown’s own Dwele.

More than two decades later, Welcome 2 Detroit remains a defining moment in J Dilla’s legacy, setting the stage for the game-changing work he would go on to create. Salute to the late, great J Dilla and the entire BBE family for delivering an undeniable hip-hop classic!
