SCREEN CULTURE: The Rock’s ‘Seven Bucks’ Scores Major TV Deal with 20th Television, Expanding Disney Partnership

Nice to be The Rock these days. Dwayne Johnson is taking his production company, Seven Bucks, to new heights with a groundbreaking television deal under Disney’s 20th Television.

Full stop. The name of The Rock’s company comes from Johnson famously having “seven bucks” in his pocket before things turned around for him. Yeah, so keep believing in your dreams and, more importantly, yourself.

As we know, this WWE turn acting icon is known for his blockbuster roles in Disney films like The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, and the billion-dollar hit Moana 2, Johnson is now set to bring his signature star power to the small screen.

Get this: The new agreement will see Seven Bucks produce a live-action remake of Moana, with Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui. It will also produce a motorsports-inspired film set in the Monster Jam universe. This move marks a significant expansion of Johnson’s prolific partnership with Disney, including the 2021 film Jungle Cruise and the Disney+ docuseries Behind the Attraction.

“Few producers are as synonymous with franchise-building as Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia,” said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television. “DJ is arguably the biggest star on the planet. His charisma and natural charm elevate every character and story Seven Bucks brings to the screen. They’ve had an incredible run with Disney films, and we’re excited to extend that success into television.”

Previously, Seven Bucks’ television division was housed at Universal TV, where it produced Young Rock, a semi-autobiographical comedy co-created and executive-produced by Johnson. The shift to 20th Television signals a new chapter for the company, which has become a film and television production powerhouse.

“Disney has been a trusted storytelling partner for years, and we’re excited to expand that collaboration into television,” Johnson and Garcia said in a joint statement. “In 20th Television, we have a partner that shares our ambition and passion for creating innovative, authentic content for audiences worldwide. Working with Dana Walden, Eric Schrier, Karey Burke, Carolyn Cassidy, and the entire 20th Television team opens the door to limitless storytelling opportunities.”

ICYMI, Seven Bucks is already riding high with major projects, including the Amazon MGM film Red One, A24’s The Smashing Machine, and new entries in Universal’s Fast & Furious and Sony’s Jumanji franchises. With this new TV deal, The Rock’s empire continues to grow, solidifying his status as one of Hollywood’s most influential figures.
