Tennis legend Serena Williams has officially joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s 15th franchise, set to debut in 2026. The team, backed by Kilmer Sports Ventures and chaired by Larry Tanenbaum, will hold an expansion draft following the 2025 season. Teresa Resch has been appointed as team president, further solidifying the organization’s leadership.
Williams expressed her excitement about the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of investing in women’s sports. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes – I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity,” she stated. “I am excited to partner with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”
Tanenbaum echoed the sentiment, praising Williams’ influence both on and off the court. “Serena Williams is an icon, a role model, and a force for change in the world. She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity, and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for – we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court.”
Williams, who already holds ownership stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC, and Los Angeles Golf Club, will play an active role in designing the team’s jerseys and developing key merchandising partnerships. In addition to her ventures in sports, she has founded several brands, including WYN Beauty, S by Serena, and a successful venture capital fund.
While Williams continues to expand her legacy in business and sports, she remains a cultural icon. Most recently, she made a memorable appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show, further cementing her status as a global ambassador for excellence.
