Filmmaking icon Spike Lee is giving major props to Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan for their upcoming horror/thriller SINNERS, calling the film a masterwork of “Black cinematic power.” The Warner Bros. Pictures release hits theaters April 18.

Taking to social media, Lee shared his unfiltered reaction after an early screening: “I just had the greatest experience watching a film in years.” He lauded Coogler’s direction as being “on a annudder level,” and celebrated Jordan for doing his “thang, thang” in the starring role.

Lee even likened the film’s emotional intensity to a courtside Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. “We’re kickin’ da Celtics in dat green ass,” he wrote. “Word iz bond, I haven’t felt this way in a movie theatre in a minute.”

He closed with a powerful statement to Coogler: “You really tapped into our ancestors on this joint.”
