Grammy-nominated, diamond-certified producer Turbo has officially won a copyright lawsuit over his iconic “Run dat back Turbo” producer tag. Filed by Georgia musician Jamal Britt in January 2024, the case alleged that Britt’s voice was used without permission and sought joint authorship and compensation for its use in over 80 major songs.
On March 7, a court dismissed all claims in Turbo’s favor, ruling that the accusations—ranging from copyright infringement to joint ownership—lacked merit. The decision reaffirms Turbo’s exclusive rights to the producer tag, which has become a staple in tracks by artists like Lil Baby, Gunna, Chris Brown, and Nicki Minaj.
Britt had originally recorded vocals for Turbo’s 2017 track Afghanistan, but the court ruled that he had no legal stake in the tag’s subsequent use. Turbo’s legal victory protects both his creative legacy and future royalties, cementing his tag as a trademark of his distinctive sound.
The “Run dat back Turbo” tag notably appears in hits like “Drip Too Hard,” which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
