The 2025 MLB season officially kicked off today in Japan as part of the Tokyo Series, with the Los Angeles Dodgers taking down the Chicago Cubs 4-1. But while the game provided plenty of excitement for international baseball fans, Shohei Ohtani stole the spotlight for sneakerheads.
Ahead of the game, Ohtani debuted a limited-edition pair of New Balance 990v6 sneakers, keeping fans of both baseball and footwear on their toes. The exclusive Shohei Ohtani x New Balance 990v6 “Made in USA” was released in limited quantities in Japan on March 16, retailing for $200 in adult sizes.
However, fans hoping to grab a pair at the retail price may be out of luck. Resale prices for the sneakers on platforms like StockX have already surged to an average of $512. If Ohtani continues his historic performances, the value of shoes will likely rise even further.
Ohtani’s debut sneaker’s colorway features a sleek blend of Navy, Green, and Cream. White laces provide a sharp contrast, and Ohtani’s signature logo on the insoles adds a personal touch to the design.
Earlier this month, New Balance unveiled its “Made for Shohei Ohtani Capsule Collection,” which included sneakers, apparel, and pop-up events. Ohtani’s gear is available for purchase on the New Balance website for those who missed out on the limited drop in Japan. Expect more phases of his signature line to roll out throughout the year.
