Trump Administration Launches $1,000 Incentive Program for Voluntary Deportations

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a new initiative offering undocumented immigrants a $1,000 stipend and travel assistance to return to their home countries voluntarily. This program, facilitated through the CBP Home app, aims to provide a cost-effective and dignified alternative to traditional deportation processes.

Migrants who choose to self-deport using the CBP Home app will receive assistance arranging travel back to their country of origin. Upon confirmation of their departure through the app, they will be eligible for the $1,000 stipend. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the program’s benefits: “Self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.”

The CBP Home app, formerly CBP One, was repurposed in March 2025 to assist with voluntary departures. It allows users to submit their intent to depart and facilitates the stipend payment upon verification of their exit. DHS projects that this approach could reduce deportation costs by approximately 70%, considering traditional deportations average $17,121 per individual.

Participants who demonstrate progress toward self-deportation may be deprioritized for detention and removal. Moreover, DHS notes that voluntary departure through this program “may help preserve the option for an illegal alien to re-enter the United States legally in the future.”

The program has seen initial participation, with the first individual utilizing the travel assistance to return to Honduras. DHS anticipates increased engagement as awareness of the program grows.
