White Smoke at the Sistine Chapel Signals the Election of a New Pope

A new pope has been elected, marked by white smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney. This is the world’s 267th pope.

Smoke billowed from the chimney on Thursday, May 8, effectively declaring resolution in the Conclave to find the successor to the late Pope Francis. The new pope will give his first blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The new pope will be asked, “Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?” Then, his new papal name will be selected, leading to control of the universal Church.
