A scary moment unfolded Monday night in Seattle when New York Yankees utility man Oswaldo Cabrera suffered a painful and potentially season-altering ankle injury during the ninth inning of the team’s 11-5 win over the Mariners.
The injury occurred as Cabrera attempted to score from third base on a sacrifice fly from Aaron Judge. In a last-second move to avoid the tag at the plate, Cabrera’s body twisted awkwardly—while his left ankle appeared to give out entirely. Witnesses described the moment as gruesome, and it was immediately clear the injury was serious.
Trainers from both teams rushed onto the field as Cabrera lay in visible pain near home plate. A towel was quickly draped over the injured leg, and within minutes, he was placed on a stretcher and transported off the field in an ambulance.

While no official medical update has been provided yet, Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the severity of the incident postgame.
“It was a pretty serious situation,” Boone said somberly. “Just praying for our guy Cabby tonight and hoping for the best. We trust he’s in good hands.”
Aaron Judge, who was credited with the sac fly on the play, shared a poignant detail that captured Cabrera’s character and team-first mentality even amid excruciating pain.
“Right before he got carted off, he called me over and asked, ‘Hey, did I score?’” Judge recalled. “That just tells you the type of guy he is. In all that pain, all he cared about was whether he crossed the plate.”
Cabrera, 25, has been a valuable and versatile piece for the Yankees, playing multiple infield and outfield positions this season. With the Bronx Bombers fighting to maintain momentum in a tough American League East, the hope is that Cabrera’s injury, while clearly significant, won’t keep him sidelined for too long.
Updates on his condition are expected to follow pending further evaluation.
