WATCH: Explosive ‘Straw’ Trailer Starring Taraji P. Henson, Teyana Taylor from Tyler Perry and Netflix

Here we go … Tyler Perry is back with a gripping new Netflix drama, and this time he’s bringing heavy emotional firepower. The newly released trailer for Tyler Perry’s Straw offers a harrowing glimpse into the unraveling life of a single mother pushed to her emotional and financial limits.

Okay so Straw is fronted by Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, the film boasts a powerful ensemble including Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Ashley Versher, Mike Merrill, and Glynn Turman. Perry not only wrote and directed the film but also serves as producer alongside Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones.

The official logline sets the tone for what appears to be one of Perry’s most intense narratives yet:

“A single mother’s world unravels in chaos as her day goes from bad to worse to catastrophic as she struggles to care for her ill daughter. Pushed to the brink by a world that seems indifferent to her existence, she’s forced to confront impossible choices in a society that offers her no safety net.”

Get this, in the trailer, Henson’s character, Janiyah, finds herself at the center of a desperate and dramatic standoff—holding a bank hostage in a gripping moment that signals how far she’s been pushed. It’s a raw, emotionally charged performance that taps into themes of survival, injustice, and the quiet resilience of motherhood.

Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Perry explained the heart of the story:

“She’s just trying to survive, just trying to be a great mother to her daughter, and then the circumstances in her life cause her to be in this situation. I think that a lot of people around the world, no matter if you’re a Black woman or not, will be able to relate to that feeling of, ‘I’m at my last straw.’”

Set to premiere on June 6 via Netflix, Straw promises to deliver a stellar cast and Perry’s signature emotional storytelling. Feels like a winner!
