Coco Gauff Wins French Open, Ends 10-Year U.S. Title Drought

Coco Gauff made history Saturday by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 to win the French Open, becoming the first American woman to claim the title at Roland-Garros since Serena Williams in 2015.

The 21-year-old’s victory also earned her $2.9 million, pushing her career earnings to approximately $27.3 million. Gauff’s comeback win thrilled the Paris crowd and capped a strong start to the 2025 season for American women in tennis.

Her triumph follows Madison Keys’ win at the Australian Open in January, making it two straight Grand Slam titles for the United States this year. Wimbledon, which begins June 30, now marks the longest active drought for American women, with Williams last winning there in 2016.
