The cinematic story of one of Hip Hop’s most iconic figures and still arguably one of the most recognizable names in the world is finally hitting the big screen, and rising star Jonathan Daviss has landed the lead role. Congrats to him!
Best known for his work on his Netflix series Outer Banks, Daviss is officially set to portray Snoop Dogg in the highly anticipated biopic about the Long Beach legend’s early years.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the film will delve deeply into Snoop’s origins, tracing his rise in the music world from the streets of the West Coast to superstardom. Under the direction of Hustle & Flow filmmaker Craig Brewer, the movie will detail how Snoop found his voice and style in Hip-Hop, delivering a unique, laid-back flow that changed the game when he linked with Dr. Dre and dropped Doggystyle on Death Row Records.
The film is being produced under the new Death Row Pictures banner, the motion picture arm of the iconic label, in collaboration with NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios. Sounds like a winner and much needed in the market.
Behind the production are Snoop himself, Hollywood powerhouse Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.
What’s more, not only will the film explore the rapper’s beginnings in the music industry, but it will also celebrate his crossover into pop culture, highlighting moments that have made Snoop a household name. From cooking shows with Martha Stewart to surprising Olympic commentary moments alongside Michael Phelps during the 2024 Paris Games, the film promises a full picture of Snoop’s wide-ranging influence.
Interestingly, Jonathan Daviss confirmed the casting news with a simple message on the Gram: “Bow wow wow.” Snoop co-signed the announcement in his own post, writing, “Let’s go nefew !!” alongside a flurry of emojis and excitement. “It’s time.”
This dope casting announcement comes after Snoop publicly spoke last year about his search for the right actor to step into his younger self’s shoes. “Actually, I’m looking for somebody who can embody the spirit when I was that young, rough around the edges trying to discover who I was, and that to me is going to be a phenomenal actor.”
More to come on this front, and we look forward to learning more.
