Hundreds of National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles over the weekend amid intensifying protests against President Trump’s immigration raids. Demonstrators clashed with federal agents downtown, leaving behind burned vehicles, broken barricades, and graffiti across government buildings. While most gatherings remained peaceful, pockets of violence flared for hours before sunset.
According to The New York Times, protesters set several Waymo driverless taxis on fire, threw fireworks and stones at law enforcement, and temporarily shut down a major freeway. Police responded with tear gas and crowd control munitions. The Los Angeles Police Department declared all downtown gatherings unlawful, citing growing violence. L.A.P.D. Chief Michel Moore warned that the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous.
California Governor Gavin Newsom formally requested the withdrawal of federal troops, calling their deployment a breach of state sovereignty. “We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved,” he wrote on X.
The Trump administration defended its position, with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller posting, “this is a fight to save civilization.” Protesters waved Mexican and other Latin American flags in support of immigrants, many saying they marched on behalf of friends or neighbors.
Former vice president Kamala Harris released the following statement:
Immigration enforcement has ramped up across Southern California over the past week, with federal officials vowing daily operations will continue. A man accused of assaulting a federal officer at a protest in Paramount was added to the FBI’s Most Wanted list.
In San Francisco, a separate solidarity protest also turned violent, leading to more clashes between police and demonstrators.
