On this day in 1995, Brooklynâs own Junior M.A.F.I.A., the crew assembled by the Notorious B.I.G., released their debut album Conspiracy on the Undeas/Atlantic label.
The group, made up of Lilâ Kim, Lilâ Cease, Nino Brown, Chico Del Vec(RIP), Kleptomaniac, Capone, Bugsy, and Trife and Larceny of the Snakes, was Biggieâs way of putting on his Bed-Stuy neighborhood and extending his influence beyond his own meteoric rise. With B.I.G. leading the charge, Conspiracy not only boosted his status as the âKing of New Yorkâ but also introduced a roster of young Brooklyn MCs ready to make their own mark.
Most notably, the album served as the launchpad for Lilâ Kim, whose fierce presence and lyricism would forever reshape the landscape for women in hip hop. Junior M.A.F.I.A.âs breakthrough singles quickly defined their sound and cemented their place in mid-90s rap. Tracks like âPlayerâs Anthem,â featuring Biggie and Kim, the smooth âI Need You Tonightâ with Faith Evans, and the classic street anthem âGet Moneyâ remain timeless staples from the project.
Thirty years later, Conspiracy stands as more than just a debut. Itâs a testament to Biggieâs vision of bringing his team into the spotlight and leaving an undeniable stamp on hip hop culture.
Salute to Junior M.A.F.I.A., Lilâ Cease, Lilâ Kim, and the late great B.I.G. for creating a project that remains a piece of Brooklyn and hip hop history.
