On this day in 1991, Trentonās own Poor Righteous Teachers, Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and DJ Father Shaheed, dropped their sophomore albumĀ Pure PovertyĀ on Profile Records, following up their acclaimed debutĀ Holy Intellect.
Largely produced by New Jersey beatsmith Toney Dofat (better known as Tony D), the 13-track project didnāt break into the mainstream the way their first album did. By the early ā90s, major labels were shifting marketing dollars away from conscious Hip Hop and pushing āgangsta rapā acts instead. That same year, DJ Quikās Quik Is the Name went gold in just four months on the very same label, while groups like PRT received less of a push.
Still, Pure Poverty delivered powerful records that resonated with fans of substance and style. Standouts included āShakiyla,ā a heartfelt dedication to Black women; āThe Nationās Anthem,ā their own spin on the 5% Nationās anthem; and the head-nodding, knowledge-laced āMethods of Dropinā Mental.ā The album carried on PRTās tradition of sharp lyricism and teachings rooted in the Nation of Gods and Earths, cementing their place in Hip Hopās conscious movement.
Today, we salute Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom, and Tony D for continuing to elevate the culture ā and we send a supreme rest in peace to Father Shaheed, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2014 at just 45 years old.Ā Pure Povertyoor righteous teachersĀ remains a timeless reminder of Hip Hopās revolutionary spirit and the importance of message music in the culture.
