Watching the Trade-Offs of Motherhood
When Robinson asked about her choice to remain child-free, Blige recalled watching family members navigate the intense demands of raising children without adequate support systems.
“I said a lot of things when I was younger. I saw a lot of people struggling. I see a lot, you know, my family members needing babysitters and them not having a choice, no freedom. When you’re younger, those are the words you make, those are the choices you make: ‘I don’t want any kids.'”

Blige also reflected on her mother’s journey, noting that her mother was awarded a vocal scholarship in her youth but sacrificed her musical ambitions to raise her children. That sacrifice fueled Blige’s drive to pursue the music career her mother couldn’t fully realize.
