Timberwolves Could Head East as NBA Prepares for Seattle and Las Vegas Expansion

The Minnesota Timberwolves may be getting a new address on the NBA map.

With the league formally exploring expansion franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas, the Timberwolves have emerged as the leading candidate to move from the Western Conference to the East if the NBA ultimately adds both teams. The league’s Board of Governors has already voted to examine the possibility, with the 2028-29 season viewed as the potential starting point.

The math is straightforward. Adding Seattle and Las Vegas would give the Western Conference too many teams, forcing the NBA to move one existing franchise east to create two evenly balanced 16-team conferences.

League insiders have also floated the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans as possibilities, but Minnesota reportedly makes the most sense from a realignment standpoint.

For the Timberwolves, the timing could be significant. Anthony Edwards would be 27 when the potential expansion arrives, placing the franchise’s centerpiece squarely in his prime. A move East would also remove Minnesota from a Western Conference landscape that has routinely demanded elite regular-season records simply to secure favorable playoff positioning.

The geographical angle could be just as interesting. Minnesota already sits in the heart of the Midwest, creating natural connections with several Eastern Conference opponents. Regular matchups against nearby markets could develop into meaningful rivalries while giving the Timberwolves fresh television and ticket-selling opportunities.

The potential move also arrives as the NBA looks toward what could be one of its most consequential expansions in decades. Seattle would restore NBA basketball to a market that lost the SuperSonics in 2008, while Las Vegas has increasingly positioned itself as a major sports destination.

If the league follows through, Minnesota could become the franchise that physically connects the NBA’s old Western footprint to its expanded future. For a Timberwolves team built around Edwards, the shift could reshape the franchise’s road to the Finals for years to come.
