D.O.P.E Music Festival (DOPE Fest) is your front row seat to the truth about the misconceptions of marijuana. Embracing a new definition to D.O.P.E.: “Don’t Oppress People Ever” thanks to a 2008 article in the Journal of Cancer Research, which reported that marijuana had profound cancer-fighting abilities; killing malignant cancer cells associated various forms of cancer.
The event is set to take place this April at an undisclosed private venue in Washington, DC. They are rumored to have a variety of promising performances and speakers in store. The hype has escalated since the release of their website, DopeFest2015 (http://www.dopefest2015.com/).
The co-founders, Patrice “LeDon” Laquinte, 24, and Will “ DJ Big Will” Thomas, 25, worked together in the nightlife industry while attending college as students. Will attended Howard University and Patrice attended The George Washington University. They later came together once again and gave birth to The People’s Champ, LLC and D.O.P.E Fest after discussing the need for a unified positive change in their communities. “Weed is seen as just a drug but the misconceptions must be addressed especially to our peers, future generations and the urban community! There are many cases, which chemotherapy has been the cause of deaths and cannabis will allow us to preserve more lives.” said Patrice. In one-way or another, everyone has been oppressed directly or indirectly.
“We are charged with being the Social Engineers of our generation… The time to implement this scientific and social movement regarding cannabis has tolled; citizens have paid a high fare to both cancer and the penal system. Build.” said legal counsel, Brandon Wyatt, Esq. Brandon has dealt with many marijuana possession cases and understands the hardships African Americans face everyday first hand. There were approximately 750,000 Americans arrested for marijuana related offenses in 2012. Arresting patients or anyone for a little cannabis while real criminals lurk the street has cost states billions annually!
“The truth must be publicized and music will help spread that truth more effectively!” said Patrice Laquinte. These young men Patrice Laquinte, Will Thomas, Todd Hughes, 27, a Howard University grad and George Washington PhD student, Brandon Wyatt, Esq., a military veteran & Howard School of Law grad, and Justin Thomas, 27, Georgetown University graduate are the much needed new leaders for their generation.
