During this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, it is evident that hip hop has come to the forefront. This week, inside Spring Studios, the iconic hip hop star/Harlem native A$AP Rocky and hip hop journalist Elliot Wilson spoke about a wide range of topics in a 90 minute CRWN interview session. Rocky answered any and all inquiries about his background, career, and views on the state of the hip-hop culture with his signature disposition. He never left behind his uber-sized confidence and playfulness. As many know, his inspirations come from legends such as Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, who is more significant because Rocky’s mother named her son after him.

Even though the interview was done between two people, every chance Rocky got, he interacted with the audience and made sure that at the end of the night, they all felt that Rocky was just like them. When asked about his upcoming movie Dope, he asked the audience if everyone was 21 and over before pitching the film as an combination of two movies that the age group would know best: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Juice. Rocky also gave fans a sneak peak at a video clip for his self-produced instrumental track “Chevy,” which will be found on his soon-to-be-released instrumental album, Beauty N the Beast: Slowed Down Sessions Vol. 1. The video was clearly inspired by a psychedelic trip. As the chopped-and-screwed beat played, the visuals repeated on a dizzying loop, as the frame constantly rocked back and forth. Grindhouse-style cigarette burns distorted the images. A$AP unconsciously danced to the beat with his eyes closed, and a random wolf ran around the set.

At the end of the night, the viewers left out the studios not only with a better idea of A$AP’s upcoming projects, but they got a closer look into who A$AP Rocky is as an individual. The event was definitely a pleasure to attend and this iconic artist still looks to the public as inspiration to his own music. The evening was also presented by Hennessy VS .
