[Interview] Lil Durk Shares His Process Behind New Album, ‘Lil Durk 2X’

Curving the sophomore jinx with a fully-developed project, rapper Lil Durk is sending out all the good vibes with his new album Lil Durk 2X. A follow-up to Remember My Name, the Def Jam signee utilizes his latest long play to exhibit his growth as an artist with an ‘at-home-with-his-craft feel’ running throughout.

Finding a happy median between turn-up and love songs, Durk offers a bit of everything for his fans with features from Future, Yo Gotti, Young Thug, Ty Dolla $ign and Dej Loaf. During his listening party in New York Wednesday, July 13, Durk shared his process behind his latest effort.

The Source: Tell me about the process. What were you thinking? What do you want people to get out of the project?

Lil Durk: I was just free with it. I just want everybody to turn up and get a good feeling. Some songs are for the turn up, some songs mean something.

It’s crazy because it seems like it’s a mix of like turn-up and love songs. It’s real subtle.

Yeah, that’s why I said I wanted to give it a mixed feeling; not too serious.

That’s cool though because it’s not too super lovey-dovey. I’m not really romantic like that myself so that’s cool.

You telling me that makes me feeling even better.

So, how long did it take to make the album?

There were some [songs] we been had and some that we just made so it was like a mixture. The whole process was fun.

You seem to generally let music speak for you. Do you feel like that’s what you did with this album, as well?

Fifty/fifty. That’s what music is for: to express your feelings, but 50/50 now because I’m more active.

Earlier you said you were shy.

Yeah, I’m more active now. It’s over with!
