The Wu is coming on cable. Bringing the New Year with a bang, it has been reported that Showtime had acquired the North American rights to Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, a documentary series that examines Shaolin’s finest and their impact upon hip-hop and pop culture.

The docuseries is directed by Sacha Jenkins, whose publication Beat Down, he gave the group its first cover in the early ’90s.

“The docu-series follows the founding members – RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, U-God, Ghostface, Method Man, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna, who grow up as childhood friends in Staten Island and Brooklyn and their meteoric in becoming the legendary Wu-Tang Clan is a seminal group that deserves a seminal documentary,” said Vinnie Malhotra, EVP Nonfiction Programming at Showtime Networks. “Sacha Jenkins delivers just that, not only reminding us of their powerful history through vintage footage, but also placing their impact in modern-day perspective that will be meaningful both to their diehard fans and music fans in general.”

Expressing his excitement over his company, Mass Appeal, producing the docuseries, Nas said, “The day has come. We are proud to formally announce #OfMicsandMen, Our definitive Wu-Tang Documentary & partnership with @wutangclan @showtime & Endeavor Content 👐🏾 it’s been an intense 18 months producing this project, and it’s almost time to share it with the world 👐🏾 Later this month we will debut this film at @sundanceorg festival & are excited to announce more details about its Showtime premiere in the coming weeks. C.R.E.A.M RISES TO THE TOP. Protect ya neck.”

Its first two episodes will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this month, and Showtime will air the entire four-part series in the spring.

A Showtime documentary featuring the legendary producer and record executive Rick Rubin is set to be released later this year. The film will be directed by Morgan Neville, who also directed the Oscar-winning film  20 Feet From Stardom and the Emmy award-winning documentary Best of Enemies.

The current working title of the doc is Shangri-La, named after Rubin’s compound and recording studio in Malibu, CA. According to Newsday, the film is as “an all-access pass into Rubin’s creative process, giving viewers a taste of what it’s like to be produced by the music world’s most singular voice.” There is no date set for the film, it’s still a work in progress.

Rubin along with Russell Simmons, founded Def Jam Recordings, while still a student at NYU, which launched the careers of LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy. After leaving Def Jam, Rubin started American Recordings. In acclaimed producer, Rubin won Grammy Awards winner for Producer of the Year and Album of the Year victories for the Dixie Chicks (Taking the Long Way) and Adele (21) in 2007 and 2012, respectively. Rubin also served as co-president of Columbia Records from 2007-2012.

Rubin would go on to work with a diverse group of artists such as Jay-Z, Johnny Cash to Kanye West, Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran.

With Netflix’s revenue hitting $16 billion in 2018, HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia and Disney preparing to launch their own streaming services, 2019 looks to be the most brutal year of “the streaming wars” yet.

But as far as Netflix is concerned, the competition extends beyond duking it out with the titans of Old Hollywood: This is a fight for eyeballs, and one of the fiercest competitors is, of all things in the streaming giant’s orbit, Epic Games. In a quarterly report released on Thursday, Netflix claimed that it competes for screen time with Fortnite.

In the report, Netflix discussed its penetration into overall screen time, which includes TVs and mobile devices that are used for television and movie viewing, video games, and more. Netflix said, “We earn consumer screen time, both mobile and television, away from a very broad set of competitors. We compete with (and lose to) ‘Fortnite’ more than HBO.”

By the end of 2018, Netflix claimed nearly 139 million paying memberships worldwide. Meanwhile, in November 2018, Epic reported that its blockbuster battle royale game commanded upwards of 200 million registered users.

“The fact that investors reacted negatively to what amounted to a strong performance indicates the extent to which Netflix has set a high bar,” said eMarketer media analyst Paul Verna. “The bottom line is that Netflix remains the uncontested leader in the subscription video space.”

Thursday’s announcement comes just two days after the streaming media titan flexed its pricing power, phasing in a U.S. subscription price hike over the next three months for existing subscribers. The new prices will become effective immediately for new subscribers.

The company reported a total of 393.3 million members worldwide.

NetherRealm Studios revealed new details on Mortal Kombat 11 during a live event in Los Angeles Thursday, offering fans a first look at gameplay, a roster of new and returning characters, and changes coming to the series’ well-worn fighting systems.

Kronika, the franchise’s first female boss, was introduced in-game footage. Her servant, Geras, is a new playable fighter. Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Baraka, and others have been confirmed as playable characters as well. Fatalities have been a classic and important part of Mortal Kombat culture since the beginning, and NetherRealm provided a detailed look at the Fatalities system in the new game.

The graphics in the new trailer look gorgeous, stepping things up from Mortal Kombat greatly. It’s been four years since the last Mortal Kombat game touched down, so fans are ready to get their hands on this new title ASAP.

Mortal Kombat 11’s story campaign is set immediately after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat. According to NetherRealm’s official description, “Raiden has upset the balance of history with the death of Shinnok. Tired of Earthrealm’s defiance, Kronika, The Keeper of Time will bring order to the universe through any means necessary.”

Where other fighting games have abandoned the pretense of any plot or even vague narrative, Mortal Kombat 11 is keeping single-player storylines alive — an element I’m told fans genuinely appreciate.

Mortal Kombat 11 drops on April 23rd on all major gaming platforms.

Epic Games’ battle royale sensation Fortnite appears to have hit another revenue milestone. According to a report from Nielsen’s Superdata the game has made $2.4 billion in 2018.

Fortnite’s haul for 2018 is a big number, but it shouldn’t be too surprising — in April SuperData reported monthly revenue of $300 million. Since then, the game has only become more popular and expanded to new platforms like Android and the Nintendo Switch

Only one other “play-to-play” type of game joined Fortnite in the Digital “Earnings” Top 10, a distinction reserved for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and it’s $1 billion sales mark. Only Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds eclipsed the $1 billion mark in 2018. In 3rd place, EA Sports ‘ FIFA 18 generated a respectable $790 million in sales. But in fairness, FIFA should technically rank second below Fortnite, with respect to the $482 million in revenue generated by FIFA 19 due to a running start in the month of September.

Fortnite first arrived in the summer of 2017, with the now ubiquitous “Battle Royale” mode arriving as a free update in September 2017. With no slowing down anytime soon, Fortnite is poised to be the most profitable video game of all time

Ever since the premiere of the Surviving R. Kelly documentary, the disgraced singer has been a topic of conversation on social media. Kells is currently under criminal investigation in Georgia, and it looks like more trouble is heading his way.

NBC’s Dateline is set to air a special episode about the Pied Piper and the broadcast will reportedly include an exclusive interview with an unnamed former intern, who is going on television to speak about R. Kelly’s sexual misconduct for the first time.

Several other women will be featured on the broadcast telling their stories about meeting the Chicago singer when they were underaged and being subject to sexual abuse physical violence and control.

Joycelyn Savage’s parents are also set to return, insisting that their daughter is being held against her will.

Finally, Kelly’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, would be given the platform to say his client denies all allegations against him.

Recreating the closing scene from the “Billie Jean” music video, complete with a lamppost-lit street corner prop and faux Manhattan skyline, Virgil Abloh turned the Louis Vuitton FW19 presentation for Paris Fashion Week Men’s earlier today (Jan 17) into a full-out fashion tribute to Michael Jackson. Fittingly enough, the King Of Pop made for the perfect style muse, and the show itself brought in a star-studded audience that was seen from the front row all the way to the runway.

There was a lot going on during the highly-anticipated runway show, which created buzz not too long ago after Abloh mentioned in his Dec ’18 Interview Magazine feature alongside Young Thug that his next fashion venture would be inspired by MJ. What was believed to be simply “capsule-sized” — Tees, hoodies and maybe even a line of sparkly gloves was the original hypothesis — ended up being a full range of ready-to-wear pieces that are the center of LV’s Fall/Winter 2019 campaign.

The color theme saw a variety of hues, starting with royal purple, vibrant red and even a few metallic silver pieces, all the way to more monotone grey and black tones. The additional pops of color came in the form of pieces sewn together by way of a multi-flag motif, and through an extension on the Wizard of Oz theme seen in the SS19 show, this time utilizing graphics based on the 1978 African American-themed remake The Wiz that famously starred Michael Jackson as Scarecrow.

Stream the Louis Vuitton FW19 Paris Fashion Week Men’s show above, then peep the photo recap below of the key players who made appearances — Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, Offset and Naomi Campbell included! — and the standout styles that made it down the runway on the backs of rappers like Octavian and even Sheck Wes:

Dave Chappelle took the stage at an improv show in WeHo on Wednesday night with his good pal and The Chappelle Show co-host, Donnell Rawlings.

Dave revealed that R. Kelly and his goons approached him out in Chicago during a Common concert, and they were not pleased about the skit which mocked his infamous sex video where he peed on an underaged girl amid sexual intercourse.

Chappelle admitted that things never got physical and his sense of humor got him out of the situation.

Towards the end of the clip, he made it clear that while he doesn’t intend to ruin anyone’s career, it’s his job as a comedian to call out wrong things.

In a recent interview with Page Six, the helmsman said that he has been hiring women on his set way before Regina King made her Golden Globes speech. King vowed to employ at least 50% women in everything that she produces.

“I’ve been hiring women way before Regina made that speech,” Lee said at a reception for his film “BlacKkKlansman.” “Go back to my crew list . . . 1986, ‘She’s Gotta Have It.’ ‘School Daze’ — [‘Black Panther’ costume whiz] Ruth Carter’s first job was in ‘School Daze.’ I’m not knocking what Regina said, but I have had very diverse crews since way back in the ’80s. So it is not something new to me.”

In regards to what he has in the works, Spike Lee revealed that he plans to turn School Daze into a Broadway Musical.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association have agreed to a lucrative licensing agreement extension with Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., creators of the popular NBA 2K video game franchise, the league announced this week.

has NBPA have announced that they will continue to work together over the next seven years, in a deal that is reportedly worth an estimated $1.1 billion. That’s easily one of the biggest we’ve ever seen when it comes to a sports franchise or any given franchise for that matter.

In a report by the Wall Street Journal, it is said that was the best selling sports-based video game of 2018. As of November, it was also the third-best selling video game of the year, regardless of genre. It’s predecessor, NBA 2K18, has sold 10 million copies which makes it the highest selling game in the entire series.

2K is thrilled with the deal and believes it’ll be beneficial for all parties in the years to come. Strauss Zelnick, who serves as chairman and CEO for Take-Two (who owns 2K), noted, “The NBA has been an outstanding partner throughout the history of the NBA 2K franchise, contributing significantly to its unparalleled success and the ability to grow its audience around the world across a myriad of platforms and offerings.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the following about the extension: “An entire generation of basketball fans engage and connect with NBA teams and players through NBA 2K. We are grateful to extend our partnership with Take-Two and the NBPA to build on the enormous popularity of the NBA 2K franchise and the continued global growth of basketball.”

The NBA 2K franchise began with NBA 2K in 1999, and it has seen a meteoric rise since then en route to becoming the most popular sports video game available.

There’s a good chance that, because of the landmark deal, the forthcoming NBA 2K20 could be one of the biggest in the series to date, though it’s unknown just what the publisher has planned for it just yet since it’s still riding high on the success of NBA 2K19.

ABC’s hit sitcom Black-ish is known for bringing the funny every week. But unlike other sitcoms, Black-ish always tackles controversial in addition to humor. This week’s episode continued that trend. The latest episode of Black -ish titled “Black Like Us” took on the issue of colorism by dealing with the ideas of skin color that is built within the Johnson household as they wrestled with the long history of complexion issues in Black families.

The episode began with Rainbow (Tracy Ellis Ross) and Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) discovering that their daughter Diane (Marsai Martin) class picture didn’t come out as expected because of bad lighting. Finding this out, forced the Johnson’s to deal with colorism in their own family and in the Black community.

Ruby (Jennifer Lewis) closes the episode by going through some of her old family photos. She began to speak about growing up in a Creole family and having darker skin than her cousins. She also shared the pain she suffered because she was not permitted to play in the front yard with her cousins but because of her darker complexion, he was made to play in the backyard.

A short clip of the powerful episode can be found below.

Walking into the new 9Mag Tattoo Shop is quite the experience.

Located steps away from the shop that fans have grown to know as the hub of Black Ink in the Midwest, the new space is nothing short of impressive. Flanked by an army of TVs, elevated glass booths, comfortable couches and plenty of space for artists and patrons to feel comfortable, the new digs are evidence of what hard work and a brilliant mind for business can result to. That mind belongs to Ryan Henry, owner of 9Mag and star of VH1’s Black Ink Crew: Chicago.

Anyone who has watched Ryan over the course of the popular series’ Chicago edition knows above all he is about making sure his business is executed. So, it’s no surprise upon arrival for the interview that you can hear his voice echoing through the shop regarding work updates and what needs to be done to keep said business flourishing. Those conversations and the following interview would be done as he has a client in his chair. The balance of the concentration on his art, participating in a self-reflecting discussion and still handling business is impeccable; it’s literally witnessing a true mastermind at work.

In conversation, Henry knows how to convey his emotions and beliefs, raw as per usual, while also showcasing the wit and charm that makes him an intriguing personality. It’s most notable when questioned about the shop from the previous season that was being constructed but is not the new one we presently sit in. “I still got it,” he says followed by a smirk. “I still got the whole building on the other side too. I got something else too — come on, man.”

Just ahead of the grand opening of the new 9 Mag, Ryan Henry spoke with The Source on showing a different side to Chicago and establishing business endeavors while also growing on TV — that’s just the half of it, though:

The Source: Being from Chicago, how does it feel to be one of the hottest shows that VH1 has right now?
Ryan Henry: Being from Chicago it feels amazing. Like, nothing ever really popped [off] here, and then to be the start of something that’s about me from my city? Then to be number one for 16 weeks, every episode? I didn’t even know that it would do that, you know what I mean? It’s just about telling our story — showing the world how things are here when they already got a stigma of how Chicago is. They’ve never related to Chicago.

That’s a good thing because even though everybody sees the headlines you all are being professional. You have issues occasionally, but the overall mission happens.
When I first received the offer it was a “no” because I didn’t want to be all on TV. All they had at that time was drill music, you know what I mean? Chief Keef. But for us, I grew up over East, and you know how it is. We show you that we ain’t have to all stay in that situation. If you showing that at this level, then you trying to look like that. So it was just showing a different…well, a different light. My city like, man, we from that, but we were able to rise and do something different.

I had a friend from Brooklyn visit and didn’t know Chicago was as developed as it is — only seeing the murder headlines.
And that’s how people see it unless they just come straight Downtown. I mean, it’s like, we come from a planned city, man. We come from a gangbanging city — a drug dealer in the city. That’s the street part of it, and all of those characteristics are in how we move. My thing ain’t about acting the fool in public. I come from a structure; I’ve come from respect. I’m not always about acting the fool. I didn’t do TV to say, “Hey, let me be on TV!” I did it to show a different part of what you knew about my city, and to give a lot of stuff that’s relatable.

There are moments where it seems you don’t want to address certain topics on TV. How does that impact you and help you grow as a person?
If people watched closely, I’m probably one of the only people to show it all. I’m not proud of it, but in certain lights when things have gotten rough, I’ve walked off; I’ve left, have gone against what I’ve agreed to do and you know, tried to fight it. I still will not jeopardize my integrity for anything, but I have found ways to professionally express that. I’m doing this to show people something better, like, “You need to calm down and learn a different way of expressing yourself, young man,”  as opposed to resulting back to the ways of being mad and stuff and swinging on people.

On the first episode of this season, a guest came in and you tatted a memorial to his son. What was that emotion of being able to help somebody with their pain, and how does it resonate in your own street?
I think the best part about tattooing is that we get to help people with closure, and you put people in a different spirit. A lot of people will come for memorial tattoos — they missing somebody, all these different types of things. That’s the best payment; somebody’s reaction to what you’ve created for them, especially when it comes to a loss. I was trying to relate to how he felt with losing his only son at seven years old. I have a six-year-old son and I couldn’t imagine it all, but I had to convey his feeling with the tattoo. [I thought about] what would it mean for him and, you know, make it be something that’s going to go with him for life. Whether it be, you know,  a name, [there’s] no way to [put a price on] memorial pieces. I think I posted the tattoo at 1:00 in the morning when everybody was sleep. I wake up, it’s like 3000 comments of people saying, “Man, I teared up man!” I cried, man. I felt it and totally understand it. I was never okay with talking about my sister and my niece both passing. Then again, I also understood that anytime I talked about it before the television show, people will reach out to me and asked me how to get help. I’ve become an advocate for domestic violence after that because it was always somebody that will reach out and if I just help one person from all of that then it means something.

We recently talked to Van, and he alluded to seeing y’all make up this season. How hard is it to sit down now and know what everybody else is enjoying on TV isn’t where you currently are.
Yeah. I mean, it was one of the hardest things for me because, like I said, we come from where we are. As far as me and Van have gotten, you know, it might not have been shown or gotten to that point on TV, but we got to a point to where we couldn’t agree or even be around each other and it could have gotten really violent or down to street stuff. Being in this situation also allows me to think like,  is this what I want to do with somebody that I used to care about? Right now I’m at the point where it’s like, “Hey man, just fuck you for life,” because that’s how I normally know how to do things. What people will see is the test of time, whether or not me and him can even have a conversation.

Do you ever find it hard to be this version of you — a businessman, father, and a friend — through the view of a TV screen? Basically being in the spotlight just by stepping outside.
It’s always difficult here [being part of the] one percentile of people. Most people don’t have to [deal with] trying to have dinner or lunch, or even grocery shopping, then having to stop and take pictures. It’s a blessing to have supporters, but I mean I’ve had to get used to it. I still can’t, though. It’s different if somebody run up on me out of nowhere and yell my name, as opposed to somebody probably running up on me from my past. It’s like, you got to take it in stride, but I’m always in the mind of protecting yourself and your family. Sometimes I don’t want to take pictures. Sometimes I’m eating with my family and people don’t care.  You have to understand that people aren’t really being disrespectful; they actually support you. Sometimes it’s rough, but it comes along with the territory of putting out something that people can support.

How did you adjust yourself to being a TV figure?
It took time. People sometimes compare us to the New York crew. For one, us and New York are two different types of people. We’re just different type of dudes and [come from] way different cultures. I mean, people relate to us differently. You can’t compare us. We got people who love us and people who hate Chicago. Ceasar knows TV. He knows how to do it. I’ve figured it out, and now that I know it we take it to a different level. As an entertainer, you’re a public figure now and you have somebody that people can look up to. The challenge is, you’re not going to always work with the real. Some people, even my producers, are not always going to be the most real people. My castmates, too. But then again, am I going to kill my opportunity to put something out to the world because niggas ain’t real? Nah, I’m going to move through it.

Honestly, I didn’t know what it was going to be like. All I wanted to do was grow people. When I say that, I mean most of the artists now were not at this point. I offered them to come work there. They worked in the house and I said nothing was wrong with that, but I had figured it out already from my two previous studios that I can tattoo celebrities here at my crib, even though I’m not going to make top dollar and be respected unless I worked in a reputable shop. Whatever level we go to, I just want you all to grow and the first level of growth is they work in this shop and get paid their worth.

Besides that, production knows how things work and where the money is. They got focus groups. They know what will work. When they tell me things they did in New York, I know it won’t be true to Chicago, too — something like how we speak. Some New York shows would be like “Bitch! Get outta here,” but my mama is in my life; I’m not disrespecting a woman like that. Just because that worked for you and people did it before, I’m not doing it, too.

You speak on showing a different side of Chicago, also making it better for those following our age group. What other ways have you seen that you can make that impact?
[Laughs] This is about to be an hour-long conversation, and I ain’t going to go all the way into it because it becomes too political. The way we change the city is from within. It’s not from so many people from the outside; it only works from within. You can go Downtown on The Magnificent Mile and see in the summertime —  six police officers on one corner. They got their hands in their pockets, so they chill. Each corner of a four-corner intersection for 10 blocks, and there’s no crime down here. The most they guarding for is a pickpocket or swiping a bad credit card. Then you can go outside, head out South and see for the next 10 blocks that ain’t one police car rolled down here all day long, let alone standing on this block. You say, “Why not have at least one officer on these blocks?” The response is we ain’t got the money to do it. We got the money to do it Downtown. What you are saying is, the lives aren’t worth the money. That’s done by design. The street dude is like, “Hey man, I know I can go and kill this nigga two blocks over and get back through over to my block and there is no police presence.”

Who’s going to change that? Nobody got an answer for you. Are you sending your Alderman money? Are you supporting the people? Are you voting in midterms? This is the first year when people really voted in midterms and learned about politics and what to vote for beyond the presidency. It takes all of these different things to happen so stuff gets done in your city. Now you know what it takes to get police riding down every block, every hour. From that, it’s like I would go over there and hit them, but man, sheriffs and police ride by there all the time. Next thing you know, we’ve gone the whole summer not killing, then it’s winter time and then when it’s time to get warm again they forgot about it. Sometimes that’s what it takes because you ain’t gonna stop me from wanting to kill him. You might have to intervene in that way. Look at how much you can do by intervening with the police presence as opposed to just not caring.

New York appears to be taking another step toward regulated sports betting, but not the one the industry really wanted.

In Tuesday’s State of the State address, Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that he’ll be pushing to get sports betting up and running in the state, a new revenue stream in a state that needs an infusion of cash to cover a $3.1 billion fiscal shortfall before it even gets to desperately needed infrastructure projects downstate.

Cuomo pointed to the fact that investment in upstate casinos saw a nice return on investment. Since those casinos are already in place, Cuomo wants to build on that by legalizing sports betting within those places.

“We invested in upstate casinos. Let’s authorize sports betting in the upstate casinos,” Cuomo said. “It’s here, it’s a reality, and it will help generate activity in those casinos.”

Following the US Supreme Court decision in May 2018, many expected the NYS Gaming Commission to promulgate the required rules as that law directs. The agency, however, has not made any tangible progress in the eight months since. It has been widely presumed that more legislation — or a nudge from the governor — is needed to move the regulatory process ahead.

The U.S. Supreme Court last year lifted a federal ban on sports wagering that had been mostly limited to Nevada. Can’t blame Cuomo for wanting in on the action.

Less than 24 hours from the confirmation of its release, the first teaser was released from the Jason Reitman-directed Ghostbusters sequel.

If they pay close attention, Ghostbusters fans even get the opportunity to get a glimpse at the Ecto-1 car.

Reitman said, “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.”

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

Ghostbusters 3 is slated for the silver screen in 2020.
