In a clip between the scenes of The Daily Show, host Trevor Noah lets us in on his intimate thoughts on the film.

In a candid moment to fans, Noah lets us know his reactions to critics of Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan. He defends that this is NOT a good Black film, but just a good film in general, which happens to be extra special if you happen to be Black. He likened the film to Wonder Woman, which in its own right is a spectacular film, made all the more special if you’re a woman.

He spoke out on that some people felt the movie is too Black, and made a wisecrack about when white people say they should make a “white movie” in which he described as pretty much a “movie” in general. He also spoke out on the parts of the film that felt intimate for him, because they spoke his home language of “xhosa” in the film so he didn’t need subtitles. Actor John Kani who plays T’Chaka in the film actually taught the language to Chadwick for the film, and it is spoken currently by 7.6 Africans today.  He also shared that the strong “badass” women of the film remind him of his mother, which was a little traumatizing cuz it reminded him of all the butt whoopings he got as a child. A fact which is interesting to note because Lupita Nyong’o will be playing Noah’s mother in his upcoming biopic.

Check out the full clip here that was posted to The Daily Show’s Twitter feed, where Trevor basks in the black excellence of one of Marvel’s most profitable movies to date.

Brits. Their just like us. (Except for the tea obsession, driving on the wrong side of the road, and the whole metric system thing.) Yet last night, the BRIT Awards, the equivalent of the Grammys, honored major label artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Alicia Keys, and more.

But more importantly, the awards served as an introduction of some of the hottest new Hip-Hop artists from across the pond, giving us at least five hot new artists to add to our playlists:

Stormzy

Winning Best British Album of the Year for Gang Signs and Prayer, the rapper, who got his start in London’s underground music scene with his combination of complex freestyles over classic grime beats, the album was one of the few in history to ever receive a perfect score from Britain’s NME magazine, is said to deliver “a knockout debut that’s brash and pensive in equal measure.” Proving that he’s more than a rapper, the artist demonstrates his gospel-worthy vocal talents on the album, most notably on “Blinded by Your Grace,” also dabbling with some EDM influences throughout the album.

Dua Lipa

Getting her start covering artists on YouTube, the singer/model made her way onto British pop and dance charts in 2016, making her the UK’s most streamed woman of 2017 on Spotify, and winning British Breakthrough Act of 2018 at the awards for her pop-esque dance beats.

Rag n Bone Man

The heavyset crooner’s appearance, whose appearance might be more reminiscent of a Son’s of Anarchy extra, shows that talent can be deceiving. Rag’n’Bone Man, is an English singer and songwriter, known for his deep, bass-baritone voice and range of musical capabilities. In 2017, he was named British Breakthrough Artist. His single “Broken People” also appeared on the Bright soundtrack, earning him a win in the BRIT Awards British Single category. While also contending with Stormzy in the highly competitive British Album category, he is a proving that he has the star power to become a household name worldwide.

Sampha

Another strong contender in the Breakthrough Artist category, the singer/songwriter/producer has collaborated with top international talent such as Drake, Kanye West, Solange, Jessie Ware, and more. With a style that oscillates from symphony-level piano player to EDM DJ to lyrical rapper, Sampha is without a doubt a major name to watch for in 2018.

Loyle Carner

The Brits’ answer to Drake, Carner’s melodies, which have been described as “confessional hip-hop,” earned him a nod with a Breakthrough Artist nomination.

Paloma Faith

The fiery artist, known for her known for retro, soul-inspired eccentric style, received a nomination for British Female Artist, filling in the gap left by Amy Winehouse’s untimely death in 2007.

So make some room in your music collection for some of these artists as well as some of the other talent honored at last night’s awards. Kendrick, Solange, Calvin Harris, and your other faves won’t mind sharing the attention- after all, they’re collaborating with them.

It’s look like Rush Hour 4 is officially a go! Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan will join forces once again for the fourth installment of the movie. Tucker appeared on The Plug Show on ESPN and stated that the movie was moving forward.

“It’s happening. This is gonna be the rush of all rushes. Jackie is ready and we want to do this so that people don’t ever forget it.” – Chris Tucker

We’ve been waiting for confirmation since last year October. Chan had told fans that the script was being worked on however we weren’t sure if the movie was going to happen but now we know that it is. The last time we saw these two together was in 2007 for Rush Hour 3 which grossed over $200 million.

There hasn’t been a confirmed date of when the movie will be released but Carter and Lee, the dynamic duo will be back together again.

Rae Sremmund and ESPN are officially in business together with a new series called Sremmlife x ESPN.

The new series is described as “NBA Life from the minds of Rae Sremmurd,” where the duo will discuss the NBA season’s biggest matchups and happenings in a series of video shorts from their Los Angeles home. In the teaser video, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi share their pick for the upcoming NBA Finals and argue that since the release SremmLife 3 is fast approaching, it’s only right that the Golden State Warriors walk away with their third championship ring.

The rap duo’s last single “T’d Up,” was first heard on an ESPN broadcast and is quite evidently sports-inspired. The trailer released on ESPN’s Youtube Channel takes us on a tour of the Rae Sremmurd mansion. In the video, the duo relishes the extravagance of their lifestyle; Jxmmi draws inspiration from Russell Westbrook, the duo bang on kid-sized hoops in what resembles an “MTV-Style” behind the scenes montage geared towards younger fans.

Fans of Rae Sremmurd can expect musical drops to accompany these vignettes. The partnership between Rae Sremmurd and ESPN will introduce the rappers to a whole new audience and expand their reach as cultural figures.

Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o announced on social media that she will star in a new film based on comedian and host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show,’ Trevor Noah‘s life. Nyong’o will play the role of Noah’s mother, Patricia, in the biopic which spawned from the autobiography Born a Crime that the comedian released in 2017. The actress will also have a producing role in the film.

“When I read @TrevorNoah‘s “Born A Crime,” I could not put the book down,” Nyong’o said on Instagram. “Excited to announce that I will be starring in and producing its feature film adaptation! #BornACrime”

Noah’s book centers around his experiences being born and growing up during apartheid South Africa when Blacks and Whites legally were not allowed to be together. The title of the book comes from Trevor being born to a Swiss father and an African mother during apartheid and being unable to be seen publicly with his father — otherwise his mother could be arrested for having a relationship with a White man. Eventually Noah’s mother separated from his father and the two were on their own along with Trevor’s younger brother, Issac.

The Kenyan actress is in for quite the challenge as Noah’s mother considering the experiences she had during Trevor’s childhood.

In the book, Patricia Noah had instances where she and Trevor had to run from an angry bus driver who saw Trevor’s complexion and new he was “born a crime.” She also raised Trevor alongside a host of family members in the same residence, but Trevor and his mother still maintained a tight relationship and shared several experiences together.

The comedian’s mother also dealt with an abusive relationship with the younger Noah’s father.  That relationship would ultimately end with Trevor’s mother, who repeatedly reported Trevor’s step-father to the police, being shot in the head by her estranged husband but miraculously surviving. Trevor also noted in the book that she was heavily into her Christian faith and kept Trevor in church on almost a daily basis.

There are no additional details on the film’s production at this time, but seeing the Black Panther star grab another role native to her roots can be considered a huge win for the ’12 Years a Slave’ best supporting actress.

This week the documentary, Agents of Change, dropped for a limited time on PBS (2/20, 2/21, 2/24 & 2/25) and chronicles the events at San Francisco State in 1968 and at Cornell University in April, 1969, where Black students demanded that the administrations of these places of higher learning give them freedom to be Black Inteligencia without compromise.

While watching this, one is reminded of when author Virginia Woolf wrote, “There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind” in her book, A Room of One’s Own.  Of course, her context is 1929 post-war Europe and she is looking through the lens of a feminist, young white woman, so she couldn’t possibly fathom what these students’ reality might be. But in theory she is “correct. ” The boundless horizon that your mind can traverse is infinite. While your mind is free, there are tools that can leave it in shackles. Black students in this documentary (and across this country) know this reality too well.

This is the crux of this film. Many Americans can boast immigrating to this land of “Milk and Honey” in pursuit of a better life, most Black and Brown people cannot. Their maafa experience (highlighted by enslavement and exploited labor) was forced, and it reduced the dignity of their transplantation to these shores. Black folk weren’t welcomed with the promise that this new world offered. They considered these people beasts upon arrival, thus their minds were of no value nor could it exercise freedom lest it hurt itself. They believed that the African — and other non-white people were unteachable and that their cultures were not substantive. The “theys” were wrong. Agents of Change as an educational tool displays what students did to show them that they were wrong.

Black students used their minds to demand the respect that equity yields.

The film shows how one of the reasons the movement had to be done by young people is because their parents clung to notions of assimilation as a device of survival. Blend in. Don’t cause trouble. Look at King. This un-tutoring of the Black psyche was necessary but with the urgency of the work at hand in San Francisco and at Cornell, the youth with their Shango Spirit of Emancipation had to move covertly and swiftly. Indeed, elders offered wisdom and history, but were so conditioned by the lash (literal and figurative) that they resigned to being intellectual second tier thinkers. History proves that our children passed on that juice and created a well throughout movement (coupled with slight force) to push for their seats at the table.

This excellently researched film explores how these thinkers recruited students to predominantly white colleges, specifically San Francisco State, and then nurtured students to be the best citizens in the space without neglecting their Black identities. They founded the Black Student Union organizations and worked with out people of color (Asians, Latinos, Indigenous) to found their own. These Black students (and the instructors that advised them) also pushed and developed a Black studies department.

At the BSU offices, they made connection with people that would become heroes many now read in history books or study in social studies… they are also in many ways your favorite rappers mentors: Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, Danny Glover and then a loose association with The Balk Panther party.  Producers of Agents of Change have rescued the term, Black Power.  It shows how layered the movement was: How socially and academic was two different things, two different methodology but all reaching the same goals.

These students’ goal was to create curriculum that spoke to them with dignity and with real historical accuracy about the African diaspora, Black faculty to teach this curriculum, benefits and increase Black student enrollment.

Agents of Change, as a tool, is needed in every school, in every city, in every state. The Civil Rights movement is often colored as Blacks only operation. Just as the thought that Black Power movement at San Francisco State was a violent activation, prompted by the Black Panther party. It was not. It was a joint movement with students and teachers. That myth was fueled by then governor Ronald Reagan who suggested that this protest was the countries own Vietnam. He fanned flames that he himself created. He took the college students and placed their prison, trying to shackle their minds.

The doc shows how students stepped up to make a change. Two years later, multiple after incarceration of students, after many nights of blood, sweat and tears, the protest ended and these students won what is considered the equivalent of Brown vs. The Board of Ed for the university level.  And schools in 2018 reap the benefit.

When the documentary shifts to movement on Cornell’s campus, the focus was on the social dynamics of race inside of academia. The sense was that the sole purpose of Black people being in Cornell was to teach Whites how to get along with people of color. One interesting note is that some students we reported for smoking marijuana, because their white counterparts did not identify the smell of Black hair being pressed. Even teachers talked about how Black women were promiscuous by nature. This prompted these Black women to move off campus to create a space that would be safe for them, this flushed them square into the community. But the straw that broke the backs of these students were that Blacks had made no contribution to the world, historically or economically. This prompted their move to creating Black Studies on the campus. Like San Francisco, they organized and work to make this a reality- against staunch resistance including the burning of crosses in front of the Black women’s lodging during parent’s weekend at the school. The question…. why target the Black women to stop the movement?

The cross burning happened early in the morning (3:00am), before classes the Black students united under the Afro-American Society (AAS) banner sprang into full swing, starting the first major racial demonstration of the campus. It was called “The Takeover.” Cornell had officially joined the ranks of many of the Black students at PWIs across the country. They had to take over.

Agents of Change gives a history lesson on how Black students found their voice, and lifted their minds to do so.

Wendy Williams has been slaying morning television for over ten years now.

From her salacious hot topics to celebrity interviews, the former queen of radio brings the ratchet every morning. However, Wendy’s health has been deteriorating in front of our eyes.

Wendy revealed today on her syndicated talk show that she has Graves disease and hyperthyroidism, and the show will go on a three-week hiatus beginning Thursday so Williams can focus on her health.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes overstimulation of the thyroid, which can lead to puffy eyes, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia and elevated blood pressure, according to endocrineweb.com.

Williams health has made headlines in recent months after she fainted on-air during her show’s Halloween episode on October 31. At the time, Williams said she became dehydrated and overheated because of the heavy Halloween costume she was wearing. A week ago she took three days off because she was experiencing flu-like symptoms. Williams returned on Monday, February 19 and told viewers she was feeling much better.

During the three week break, reruns will be airing , as the show will not have a fill in host.

Words by Nick Slay

Black patrons from around the world come dressed in their best African gear to support Marvel’s Black Panther.

For most African Americans, finding their place in the world is a complicated thing. Most descendants of Africans who were enslaved during middle passage,  don’t have a clear definition of their cultural past. This is due to the nature of the middle passage.  This torturous process was economic in origins but had an underline purpose of destroying any ties the captured African had to the continent (including language, culture, style, and religion.)

Hollywood does not make this easier.

Films often show Africa in a myriad of ways: some positive and some well totally off. While movies like, Eddie Murphy‘s, Coming to America and Ryan Coogler‘s, Black Panther celebrate African culture on a monumental scale, there are more moments where Hollywood whitewashes the African experience. Chief among these examples is Elizabeth Taylor‘s interpretation of “Cleopatra” in the film about the Egyptian queen. While many industry insiders rave about the dollars spent to create Wakanda, it would seem that more money was placed in the lie.  Disney paid $200 million for production of the Black Panther and to the contrast 20th Century Fox in 1963 invested more to create the false image of Cleopatra’s kingdom. To make this film that many consider an epic, they spent a modest budget of $44 million, which if you factored in inflation leaps would equate to $334 million in 2013.

But who is checking for Cleopatra? Most everyone when thinking about Africa in pop culture, think CTA and BP.

As much as these two films are celebrated, they are worlds that simply do not exist. They are an amalgamation of borrowed cultures to create present lands. Regardless of whether or not they exist, this concept of African kingdoms untarnished by colonial rule means a lot to peoples of color around the world. They represent what might of been if fertile lands like the Congo went untouched by the butcher of Belgium, King Leopold who slaughtered millions of Africans or Egyptian statues were left unblemished by European hands. So when creating the fictional lands of Wakanda or Zamunda, a bit of world building was needed. That means borrowing images and cultures across the African continent to recreate something new, almost if an ideal. This created a boldness reflected on Black Twitter for people of African descent to find their finest cultural duds to show out.

If Zamunda opened our eyes to wealth and prosperity Africans and their descendants could have, then Wakanda showed us the beauty of the many tribes of Africa. Each one styled colorfully and proud at the box office. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, in collaboration with production designer Hannah Beachler, created visuals of tribes people in brightly patterned wax prints, neon-colored lip plates, and regal, elaborate headdresses, all incorporating aspects highlighting vast African cultures and traditions. These are visuals that exist beyond the white and Western imagination then presented unfiltered on a Disney screen no less. For peoples who often struggle to find positive images of self, Black Panther may have finally successfully build on the stepping stone Eddie Murphy masterfully initiated.

Oh did we mention that Eddie Murphy posted then deleted a tweet about a possible Coming To America 2?

We joyously look forward to all this #MelaninPoppin in 2018 and beyond!

20 years.

It’s been two decades since hip hop lost two of it’s biggest stars and their slayings continue to go unsolved. Enter USA Networks- who’s had massive success with it’s true crime series, is now tackling Tupac and Notorious BIG murders in a scripted limited series. The USA series tackles a different- and refreshing perspective on the controversial mysteries, chronicling the dual police investigations of Detective Greg Kading (Josh Duhamel) and Detective Russell Poole (Jimmi Simpson) and focusing on the pair’s complicated friendship. Bokeem Woodbine also stars as Officer Daryn Dupree.
Marcc Rose, who plays Tupac Shakur, will reprise his cameo as the west coast rapper from 2015’s blockbuster Straight Outta Compton and Wavyy Jonez plays the “Juicy” rapper. Primarily based in Los Angeles, the show travels behind the headlines and conspiracy theories of the cold cases, taking an in-depth look into the culture that defined them and provide fans with new information they did not previously know about their premature deaths.

Marcc Rose as Tupac and Wavyy Jonez and Biggie – “Unsolved”

Directed by Emmy Winner Anthony Hemingway, fresh off the the wildly powerful and award winning series “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” the series will dissect the icon’s murders, which were in 6 months of each other.
The Source caught up with Marcc and Wavyy as they talked about their roles, what they think the icons would think of hip hop evolution and more.

What questions will Unsolved address that the public doesn’t already know?

Marcc: A few questions “Unsolved” will address are: What actually went down during the investigation of these two murders? Did Voletta Wallace actually sue the LAPD? How did their deaths affect their families and the people around them? Hip hop fans will be enlightened by the amount of information we managed to include in each episode.

How will hip hop fans be enlightened?

Wavvy: HIP HOP FANS WILL NOT ONLY BE HIP TO THE ACTUAL FRIENDSHIP TUPAC AND BIGGIE HAD BUT ABOUT THE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION BEHIND THE SCENES TO THE MADNESS OF US LOSING TWO OF THE CULTURES GREATEST ICONS

It’s been two decades since the their deaths. Why hasn’t these cases- as high profile as they are, have yet been solved?

Wavyy: I WOULD SAY FEAR PLAYED A GREAT PART IN THAT, TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS NO ONE REALLY KNEW THE FORCE THEY WERE UP AGAINST OR WHO REALLY WAS ON WHAT SIDE.. THIS CASE HAD A LOT OF UPS AND DOWNS THAT THE VIEWERS WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE IN “UNSOLVED.”

Marcc: Well unfortunately most of the people who testified/were involved back in the day are either dead or in jail. Detectives have also been removed from cases so you can only imagine.

Bokeem Woodbine and Josh Duhamel

How thin was the line between adding fiction- for entertainment purposes, and fact?

Wavyy: VERY THIN. OUR CREATOR AND WRITER KYLE LONG WAS VERY INVESTED IN THE JUSTIFICATION OF THIS CASE AS WELL AS OUR GREAT DIRECTOR ANTHONY HEMINGWAY IN REALLY NAILING THE STORY TELLING OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPEN TO THESE GUYS. NOT MUCH FICTIONALIZATION TO PURE HEARTS WITH A TRUE PASSION TO BRING CLOSURE TO THIS PARTICULAR CASE.

Marcc: Very, very thin! So thin that you would think majority of it is fictional. There’s one scene in the pilot where Pac and Big were running around playing with guns in a backyard. Even I thought it didn’t happen because at the time they were so young. But sure enough it happened! You’ll be surprised.

How did you prepare for your roles?

Wavyy: I HAD ALWAYS BEEN A B.I.G FAN SO PREPARING FOR THE ROLE WAS REALLY FUN WATCHING GETTING TO KNOW HOW HE LOOKED AT PEOPLE AND STUDYING NOT ONLY THE BIGGIE I KNEW BUT THE CHRISTOPHER WALLACE I DIDN’T KNOW. I ALSO HAD AN AMAZING ACTING COACH, BROOKLYN MCLINN, THAT REALLY WORKED WITH ME IN CAPTURING THE ESSENCE AS WELL AS TALKING TO EASY MO BEE WHO PERSONALLY KNEW PAC AND BIG.

Marcc: Honestly, PAC has a great amount of footage online, so I started there first! I watched the way he moved, his mannerisms, his expressions. I also read the books he read (“The Art of War” by Sun Tzu). His brother Mopreme Shakur was on set day in and day out making sure things stayed authentic and true. My director Anthony Hemingway gave me so much insight it literally felt like the pressure was stripped! I was able to zone in.

What’s your personal favorite Tupac and Biggie track?

Wavyy: “UNBELIEVABLE” FOR BIGGIE AND “THUGS MANSION” FOR TUPAC.

Marcc: My favorite Biggie track would have to be “Juicy.” I’m from Brooklyn NY myself so when I hear “Juicy” play through the speakers I go crazy. It’s like the home anthem. My favorite Pac track would have to be “Keep Ya Head Up” because of the message he gave. ‘Til this day that song speaks to people of all color and all races-powerful.

Notorious BIG and Tupac

What do you think Tupac and Biggie would think of hip hop of today?

Wavvy: I WOULD HOPE THEY WOULD HAVE KEPT THAT STRUCTURE BUT WHO KNOWS, HIP HOP WORKS IN AN ODD FORM. A LOT MORE THINGS ARE ACCEPTABLE NOW THAN IT WAS BACK THEN.

Marcc: I think they’d honestly be on top of the game right now. Hip Hop has changed so much over the years I don’t think they’d rock with most of the music that gets played on radio today. There aren’t messages being told the way they used to anymore. I feel they would’ve changed that.

How do you expect the audience to receive the series?

Wavvy: I WOULD HOPE THEY TAKE AWAY FROM THIS SERIES THAT TUPAC AND B.I.G WERE GENUINE FRIENDS AS WELL THE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION PEOPLE DON’T TALK ABOUT; HOW HAVING PEOPLE IN YOUR EAR CAN REALLY TWIST YOUR MIND UP AND LEAVE NOTHING UNSAID WITH THE ONES THEY LOVE.

What were the challenges in filming the series?

Wavyy: WELL GREATNESS CAN OFTEN BE IMITATED BUT NOT DUPLICATED AND OFTEN A DUPLICATION IS WHAT PEOPLE WANT AND LOOK FOR AND I WANTED TO GIVE THE BEST PERFORMANCE I COULD. I ALSO PRAYED ABOUT REALLY GETTING INTO THE MIND OF BIGGIE.  I AM COMPLETELY SATISFIED IN THE WORK I DID IN UNSOLVED.

Marcc: One of the biggest challenges of filming the series had to have been reenacting the death scene in Vegas. We flew to Vegas and literally went through moment for moment. Just being in the moment, sitting in the passenger seat of the car, looking out the window of a shattered dash board as people looked on, on such a public busy street- it was crazy! I literally had to take a minute before finishing the scene.

Wavyy Jonez, Bokeem Woodbine, Marcc Rose

What’s your most memorable scene you filmed and why?

Wavyy: MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IS BEING IN THE CLUB TELLING MY BRO MARCC ROSE (TUPAC) NOT TO MESS WITH HAITIAN JACK (DONALD FAISON) AND JIMMY HENCHMEN (WOODY MCCLAIN) BECAUSE THEY WERE BAD NEWS AND THAT PARTICULAR EPISODE WAS BEING DIRECTED BY ERNEST DICKERSON AND MARCC KEPT SWITCHING HIS WORDS AND MAKING ME LAUGH TO WHERE WE HAD TO STOP BECAUSE EVERYBODY STARTED LAUGHING. IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!

Marcc: The most memorable scene I filmed was the first episode. For me it was exciting to see the friendship between these two dudes. In the past, the media had a field day with exploring the East Coast West Coast beef. Not a lot of people knew the extent of their friendship. Now they will!

“Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” premieres Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. ET on USA Network.

The success of Black Panther continues to dominate with grossing over $387 million in a four day opening weekend. As more countries gear up to release the premiere, this number can potentially change. With success, controversy always takes place.

A petition has been going around on Change.org urging the studio backing the Black Panther movie, Marvel Studios, to take 25% of the profits made and put towards the black community. According to the petition creator, Chaz Gormley, he questions what would the black community get out of seeing this monumental movie and how Marvel only cares about the almighty dollar.

“As a win, what exactly will the black community gain, aside from another symbolic victory?”, Gormley says in the description of the petition. “however, Marvel Studios hasn’t pulled out all the stops to get everyone else to come to the theatres–because they want the one thing the black community has to offer in abundance, black dollars”. The petition has already garnered 7,985 signatures below of its 10,000 goal and is soon to rise as more signatures contribute to the cause.

As the petition makes its rounds through social media and garners more attention, celebrities voice in support of the cause while others do not. Talking to a TMZ reporter in Los Angeles International Airport, actress Vivica A. Fox shows her support.

“Change.org wants 25% of the proceeds for Black Panther to go back into the community, I think that is an excellent idea”, Fox says.

Blue Comedian Gary Owen (who is white and married Black with Black kids) thinks otherwise.

“It is not the responsibility of the movie companies— I don’t know, just enjoy the movie. It’s not their job to give part of proceeds to different charities. I mean, when will it stop?”, Owen responds.

In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Chadwick Boseman mostly sided with Owen on the matter.

“Honestly, who cares? At the end of the day, filmmaking is a commercial art.– If you don’t make money when you make movies, then you can’t make movies. That’s what it is”, Boseman said.

At the end of the day, Black Panther is a monumental movie and it should be celebrated, not just because it’s the first Black superhero movie, but with an All-Black cast and gorgeous costumes combined. Marvel Studios has yet to comment on the petition.

There is no doubt that the rise of Death Row Records and the artists signed to that monumental label can be attributed almost singlehandedly to Marion “Suge” Knight. His unorthodox methods of maintaining Death Row’s position at the top of the game may have contributed to the head of Death Row’s downfall.

With the current state of Suge Knight’s three year old murder trial looming along with the unsuspecting arrest of the former Death Row CEO’s fiancée Toi-Lin Kelly and the subpoena of the phone of the producer of the highly anticipated docu-series, Death Row Chronicles is a must watch for Hip Hop aficionados who are still unofficially investigating the crimes that followed the East vs. West rap wars.

After the subpoena for the cell phone of Death Row Chronicles producer Nora Donaghy was issued just weeks ago, the content of the phone conversations in question is what LA County authorities want to hear, but for viewers of the first episode of the BET documentary, Suge’s voice via jail phone is the most intimately accurate commentary in terms of the origins of Death Row Records. The urban legend stories about Suge hanging Vanilla Ice from a hotel balcony in order to sign song releases to having a reluctant Eazy-E beat up and threatened to the point of releasing Dr. Dre from his Ruthless Records contract are fables of hood lore that only Suge Knight could give specific details about that everybody wants to hear.

The documentary shows more in the spirit of a gangster story rather than that of a record label, with its financial beginnings starting in a federal prison visiting room between reputed gangster Michael “Harry-O” Harris and Knight. From the continuous mentions of the Bloods and Crips being so covertly woven among the who’s who of Hollywood to Bobby Brown allegedly asking Suge for help in order keep from getting killed, Death Row Records really lives up to the name that it was given by Harry-O back in 1992.

Check out the BET documentary Death Row Chronicles tonight at 8pm EST/7pm CST.

In today’s often times contentious social media environment, motivation and inspiration can be hard to find. Far too many apps, which were originally created to build social communities, blast anger, division, and controversy with the touch of a smartphone icon.

A year ago, Shelby Tinsley, armed with a master’s degree in psychology, entrepreneurial spirit, and a crew of positive friends, set out to change that dynamic by creating iShallBe, a smartphone app created in partnership with Troy Thompson of TDCT, that serves as a platform for everyone to “speak nothing but positive things for life’s journey into existence.” iShallBe provides a daily affirmation to uplift users through quotes, music, inspirational videos, and motivational messages. In addition, iShallBe encourages users to not only share their posts, known as “iShallBe Statements” with the community, but to also support and affirm one another.

While the app was only launched recently in November of 2017, the foundation of iShallBe started long before smartphone technology on the day that Tinsley was born (iShallBe is a play on Shelby’s name). As the story goes, her parents didn’t know what to name her, and as her mother was in the hospital in labor, her aunt, who was trying to figure out what to name her, said, “she shall be…whatever she puts her mind to.” From there, she was named Shelby, and the iShallBe philosophy became a guiding force in her life. The daily affirmation quotes are quotes that Tinsley has collected throughout her life- church, graduation ceremonies, motivational YouTube channels, books, and conversations with friends.

More importantly, iShallBe is a platform with an emphasis on positivity and community. According to Tinsley, the app was created “with the strong desire to encourage others to get through all trials and tribulations, and remind you that there will be victory in the end of all troubles. iShallBe supplies nourishment to both mind and soul and is a place for everyone to speak nothing but positive things for life’s journey into existence.”

iShallBe regularly hosts community events, including most recently, a showcase of local Black designers (in partnership with Soulcial Scene), as well as past events such as a the iShallBe Restored: “Panel Discussion on Finding Your Happy Place”. Their next event on the horizon is iShallBe Fit: a live cooking demonstration focusing on healthy dishes.

Most notably, however, is the platform’s recent celebration of Black History month. Throughout February, iShallBe has been featuring various “movers and shakers that represents Black Excellence,” in cities throughout North America.

While Tinsley may be the namesake behind the app, she also is quick to credit her amazing team of volunteers that help with planning, organizing events, and pushing the message on a daily basis.

In just under six short months, the app has been downloaded throughout the United States as well as spreading to other countries, reaching as far as Nigeria. There’s no doubt that iShallBe “shall be” worldwide by the end of the year!

Tinsley wraps up with a summary of her life’s philosophy. “It is up to you to remain faithful and speak nothing but love, joy, and positivity in your life.”

For if you speak it (or type it), it shall be!

iShallBe is available for Download via iPhones (Apple App Store) and Androids (Google Play).

Black Panther has been said to be the most anticipated movie release during Black History Month for more reasons than one.

One reason being that the director Ryan Coogler managed to incorporate everything in the film, from politics, world issues, romance, comedy and of course, Marvel. One topic that got the proper representation was the kidnapping by Boko Haram in 2014.  Just over three years ago, 276 school girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram; an Islamic extremist group, in the Nigerian village, Chikbok. Based in northern Nigeria this group has been terrorizing the country since 2009. They have been responsible for the numerous massacres of civilians and abductions of women and little girls. This group strongly believes that western culture is “sinful” and wants to return the country to the pre colonial era of Muslim rule. Boko Haram was founded in 2002 by a Muslim cleric named Mohammed Yusuf after Nigeria’s transition from dictatorship to democracy in 1999.

One of the main reasons Boko Haram kidnapped these innocent school girls was because they wanted  their captured members freed from Nigerian prison. In May 2014 after the kidnapping Boko’s group leader, Abubakar Shekau released a video showing about 130 school girls, stating that “the girls have converted to Islam and will not be released until Nigeria frees from prison all Boko Haram members.” After many failed attempts to negotiate, and only successfully getting back 20 girls, the Nigerian’s House of Representatives put out a motion urging the executive branch to expedite negotiations for the girl’s safe return which resulted in 82 more girls being released. This left them with a little over 100 girls that have been freed from captivity, however there is still 100 plus girls still waiting to come home.

“However the work is not yet done, too many families are still anxious today. Too many of our daughters have not returned,” Senate President Abubakar Bukola said in and statement.

In Black Panther, Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), and Danai Gurira (Okoye) managed to bring this topic to life. Lupita’s character is undercover trying to liberate a group of women from the clutches of a paramilitary outfit that is reminiscent to Boko Haram. This is not the first time that the African blockbuster duo has teamed up to add their political voices to the art. In 2016, when the Gurira’s play ECLIPSED made it to Broadway, she tapped her friend Lupita to take the lead. The play was about African women forced to live with their African soldier oppressors during the Liberian Civil War. While the play was heavy enough, showcasing young girls ripped from their homes to serve as slaves, they took it a step further and after each show called out the name of one of the Boko Haram girls.

Black Panther was another tap on the international shoulder to not forget about the girls who some are still missing. More over it is also a tap to show that Africa is not just a continent of victims, but one of powerful resources sufficient to save the world.

In the film, Nyong’o’s character tries to convince T’Challa to use Wakanda’s resources to make life better for the less fortunate populations in Africa and beyond.

“We were creating an inspirational world where African people are in charge of their own destiny,” Lupita stated.

Director Ryan Coogler had the right idea by incorporating this topic among many others in the film. What better way to get the public’s full attention then to attach it to something that every one of all ages can understand. This film allowed viewers all over the world to get a better understanding of Wakanda, and Africa as a whole.

“This is a nation that is highly developed, and they are so because they didn’t get interrupted by or assaulted by colonialism.” – Lupita Nyong’o

Black Panther made history at the box office this weekend, reportedly bringing in $192 million for its three-day debut in North America, which is the fifth biggest opening of all time. The film is a first of its kind superhero movie, with all-Black cast and a Black director, Ryan Coogler. There are countless empowering moments in the film, which can inspire anyone, but the target is definitely Black people across the globe. Black Panther is based on the comic book Black Panther: World of Wakanda, which was written by Roxane Gay and Ta-Nehisi Coates. World of Wanka tackled race, class and gender, all issues the film explored. However, there was one notable omission from the movie that was in the comic books — sexual orientation.

In Black Panther: World of Wakanda, a character named Ayo is in a relationship with another woman named Aneka, which was groundbreaking to have a Black LGBT character in a comic book. Since April, there have been questions on how the romance would be handled in the film, but rumor had it Ayo’s relationship was cut. However, it was reported there was a scene in which Ayo, played by Florence Kasumba, flirts with Danai Gurira‘s character Okoye. The scene did not make the movie.

Kasumba confirmed to Vulture the scene existed and explained, “The thing is, if the makers would have wanted everyone to see the scene, it would have been in the movie. The final result that we’ve seen, there were a few scenes that have been cut. Different scenes, also — they didn’t make it into the movie for certain reasons, and at that point, I have to say: What their reason is, I can’t tell you, because nobody told me about whether it’s in or not.” She also added, “But at this point, I personally think people have no idea who T’Challa is, who are the Wakandans, what is Wakanda, where is Wakanda, what is their culture. There are so many important things that had to be told in these two hours. So the focus was on what is so important for T’Challa. What happens after the last movie that we saw. I know all the other scenes that we have also filmed that are not in the movie. People have their reasons why not.”

When asked if she would like to see her character’s relationship on screen, she answered, “I’d love to, at some point. Not now, because it’s too soon. At this point, the focus is somewhere else. I started reading World of Wakanda towards the end of filming and I loved reading the comics. I loved reading about, Okay, how do the Doras become Doras? … That’s the whole reason why we had a boot camp [to train for the movie]: In order to be physically able to move as a unit. That was more important. That’s what I’m saying, right? Who is in love with whom and whatever — that was not important in this movie.” Well said, Florence.

Lately it seems every time Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan get together magic happens.

Now the dynamic duo has their eyes set on a very rich project, a Mansa Musa biography. Coogler and  Jordan want to make influential videos to inform viewers of contributions of the Black community throughout history.

“You got to tell stories in today, or in the future,” says Jordan. “Or can we go back even further? There’s always one period that people want to go back to, but can we go back to Hannibal? Or Mansa Musa, destroying economies as he traveled? Can we go back to the Egyptians?”

Mansa Musa was a very influential African ruler during the fourteenth century. He was emperor of the Mali Empire, a land  full of gold, which he gave out frivolously during his pilgrimage to Mecca, causing economic crises to cities not accustomed to such wealth. In 1324, he became the first Muslim ruler to make the almost four-thousand-mile pilgrimage. During his travels, he met rulers from the Middle East and Europe, putting Mali on European maps.

He helped boost Islamic education when he brought back scholars from his pilgrimage; he also brought back government bureaucrats and architects. His development of mosques and a major university helped urbanize the city of Timbuktu, which is still inhabited to this day. He reigned for 25 years, and during that time there were years of peace in Western Africa.

This is a story that is well overdue. Hollywood would want to jump on the Black history wave while it’s hot.
