When Don Trip first gained notoriety with “Letter To My Son” back in 2010, expectations were high. Fast-forward 2 years later, the now 27-year-old Memphis resident is signed to Interscope Records. Having worked with producers like Dr. Dre, Don is putting the final touches on his debut album,Help Is On The Way, slated to drop this summer. Before any of that comes to fruition however, Trip gives us Guerilla, a 17-track mixtape under the infamous Gangsta Grillz umbrella.  

Don’s appeal is his ability to mix trap records (“The Life,” “Untitled,” and “Shut Up”) seamlessly with tracks where he expresses his pain (“Human,” “Trap’d In the Trap”).

Trip doesn’t rely on a star studded lineup for features, instead calling on the services of a few acts with their own momentum. On “Pussy” 2 Chainz makes yet another appearance as the feature is almost a trademark for the Atlanta rapper thanks to his busy 2011 campaign. Juicy J, who has made a resurgence after going solo (culminating in a deal with Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang Records), appears on “The Life” alongside Yo Gotti. Finally, Wale’s resurrection proves to be humbling as he’s not too big to help new artists on the come-up with “Imma Mess,” although he seems to be more impressed with his own verse than those listening.

The Cool & Dre produced “Allen Iverson” is Guerrilla’s bright spot, as Trip dissects the perils of fame and riches perfectly, using the former NBA superstar as a prime example (Practice!?).

The production on Guerilla is nothing to write home about and neither is Don’s range. But his hunger more than makes up for that, which is clear on the title track “Guerilla” and the gloomy cut “Sorry Momma,” a song displaying his eagerness for success. At the very least let Guerrilla be a teaser into what the MC is capable of.
