Throwback Movie Thursday: Training Day

Denzel Washington is undeniably one of the most talented and diverse actors of not only our time but of all time. Whether he’s the hero or the villain, he undoubtedly never fails to steal the show and “Training Day” is no exception.  The 2001 crime drama delves into the dynamics of a decorated LAPD narcotics officer, Alonzo Harris (Washington), and rookie officer, Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), as the veteran evaluates Hoyt’s training. “Training Day” is all about the fine line and the questionable tactics that forces the officers to cross it. Denzel, the hardened veteran, challenges and exposes the naive rookie to the harsh reality of street crime causing conflict between the duo and a long list of problems in the streets.

The reasons to watch this movie are countless and the reasons to slap yourself for not seeing it double. In addition to Denzel and Ethan, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg (Lion), Macy Gray, and the beautiful Eva Mendes all star in the film, making it a memorable project.  Denzel’s role as Alonzo earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2001, and was listed in AFI’s 100 Heroes and Villains in 2003. Huge names contributed their music for the soundtrack including: Dr. Dre, Nelly, Diddy, Clipse, The Neptunes, and Cypress Hill
