On April 15,2013, in the heart of Brooklyn, Bed-Stuy held the heat of the night in a two-part kickoff festival dedicated to one of the hip-hop originators, the “BOOMBOX.” The House of Art Gallery (HOA) located off of Marcus Garvey Blvd. (btw. Macon & Halsey) hosted what was a night to remember for the start of a showcase in ode to the art of sound, the boombox.
Based on some inspiration from Lyle Owerko’s book ‘The Boombox Project’ and the perspective of the influence of the boombox in New York City from the mid-70’s and 80’s era. Among those in attendance for the commemoration was none other than the owner of the HOA Gallery, Richard Beavers, and an impeccable line-up of artists: Jamal Shabazz, Justin Buo, Frank Morrison, Dan Ericson, Najee Dorsey, Charlotta Janssen, Jas Knight, Nina Boesch, Anton, Tim McCray, and Phyllis Stephens.
The Boombox Exhibition will be open to the public to view until June 9th.
