Let’s Pay Homage To The Captain – Derek Jeter’s Greatest Career Moments

The Flip

October 13, 2001

Jeter made one of the most memorable plays in MLB history on this October night in Oakland. The Yankees faced elimination from the postseason against the Oakland Athletics in the 2001 ALCS. A ball hit down the right field line and Athletics DH Jason Giambi headed towards home plate. Yankees RF Shane Spencer threw the ball in from the OF and missed the cutoff man, and Jeter made the heroic play.

The Captain ran from the third base side of the diamond and threw a backhand flip to catcher Jorge Posada who tagged Giambi. The play would ultimately change the outcome of the series and New York would go on to win in Game 5 to advance to the World Series.
