All weave can look natural if it’s done right.
Both LaJoyce and Michelle maintained that quality hair, when installed right, can look natural.
Case in point: I though Michelle’s beautiful, springy, curls were her own. Technically, they were–after all, she is the one who bought them.
The ladies recommend Remy hair if your hair is naturally straight, Brazilian for curly hair, and Malaysian for those who want a little bit of a wave.
Good weave is an investment.
“A good hair piece is an investment,” Lajoyce said. “You can expect a quality one to run you between $70 and $200. Find a vendor that specializes in virgin hair.”
Weave has an expiration date.
Michelle was quick to say that weaves “absolutely” have an expiration date. “An install will last you 6 to 8 weeks. In the mean time, you can come in and get it tightened every two weeks. You can even come in here weekly so we can wash it for you, that way we ensure the braids underneath are properly dried, too. If you properly maintain the hair, good hair can be used for up to one year.”
Use the right products.
“Make sure you wash and deep condition your weave; I usually do it weekly,” LaJoyce recommends. “A sulfate free shampoo is best.”
“Anything by Paul Mitchell is good,” Michelle chimed in. “They have a great clarifying shampoo, which is what you want, because it will remove any product buildup from the weave.”
“A tea tree oil shampoo is great for that, too. Also keep in mind that even if the hair is great quality hair, it can still be damaged by heat, so using a heat protectant before styling is highly recommended,” LaJoyce advises.
You don’t have to style with heat.
Sleeping with bantu knots, big braids, and rollers will all give you great volume and beautiful curls.
Less is more.
“When it comes to product, less is more,” Michelle said. “Use the absolute bare minimum of hair spray or other styling products in your hair, otherwise the hair can get dirty and weighed down.”
