gil-scott-heron-300x200On this day in 1949, Gil Scott-Heron, the legendary poet and musician was born. Best known for his work in the late 60s and 70s the Chicago born author revolutionized spoken word by delivering his political and social lyrics in both a rapping and melodic style.

He released his first novel entitled the Vulture in 1968 and soon after was encouraged by fellow musician and friend Bob Thiele to start a music career. His first album featured readings from his book of poetry Small Talk at 125th & Lennox. The most memorable track off the album was “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Scott-Heron’s take on American media’s ignorance to what occurs in inner cities.

Scott-Heron would go on to create 14 more albums, his last  I’m New Here released in 2010. After suffering from years of drug addiction in 2008 the late poet announced that he was HIV positive. He died May 27, 2011.

His profound work is said to have influenced a generation of hip-hop artists.
