Thanks to the governor, thoroughly Red State of Florida passes marijuana legislation for kids
Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott signed legislation ST 1030 into law on monday, a.k.a the “Charlotte’s Web” law.
The law allows for the self-titled, low potency Charlotte’s Web Marijuana strain to be used medically for children suffering from debilitating seizures.
Charlotte’s Web is low in the psychedelic THC compound and high in the supposedly medically beneficial cannabidiol (CBD) compound. This mix is slated to be beneficial for patients of any age, especially for younger children, providing them the ease of pain without the intoxicating and mind altering side effects.
The strain is allegedly especially potent on helping halt life-threatening grand-mal seizures in juveniles and decreasing the amount that occur over time, but has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
During the legislative session Monday Scott said, “The approval of Charlotte’s Web will ensure that children in Florida who suffer from seizures and other debilitating illnesses will have the medication needed to improve their quality of life. I am proud to stand today with families who deserve the ability to provide their children with the best treatment available.”
According to ABC Orlando, the House limited eligible growers to large commercial nurseries that have been in business in Florida for at least 30 years. The measure also requires five distribution centers — one each in the northwest, northeast, central, southeast and southwest parts of the state.
The push for the bill came from another conservative in Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican who took up the cause after discussions with Holley and Peyton Moseley. The couple said Charlotte’s Web can help their adopted daughter, RayAnn, and children in about 150,000 other Florida families.
