According to a New York Times report, U.S. Attorney general Eric Holder will resign.
The Justice Department stated that Holder finalized his plans to leave after an hour meeting with President Obama over Labor Day weekend.
Holder has been the most prominent liberal voice of the Obama administration. As the United States’ 82nd attorney general, he’s the first African American to hold that office. Holder would have been the third longest serving Attorney General in history had he stayed on until the end of the year—his original plan.
“The resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder is met with both pride and disappointment by the Civil Rights community,” National Action Network President and MSNBC Politics Nation host Reverend Al Sharpton said in a released statement to The Source Magazine.
“We are proud that he has been the best Attorney General on civil rights in U.S. history and disappointed because he leaves at a critical time when we need his continued diligence most.”
Attorney General Holder will remain in office until the Obama administration finds his successor.
